What is a birth chart?
A birth chart, or natal chart, is a map of where the sun, moon and planets were at the exact minute and place you were born. Astrology reads each planet by the sign it was in and the house it fell in.
Sun, moon and rising
Your sun sign is the one you already know. Your moon sign is said to describe your inner life, and your rising sign, the sign on the eastern horizon as you were born, how you meet the world. The rising sign needs your birth time, because it changes every two hours.
Why the birth time matters
Without a time the chart is cast for noon. The planets barely move in a day, but the moon moves about 13 degrees, so near a sign change your moon sign can be off, and the rising sign and houses cannot be worked out at all.
