The 12 zodiac signs: dates, elements and meanings
Updated October 10, 2026 · How we write these pages
The short answer
The twelve zodiac signs are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Each covers about a month of the year, the stretch the Sun spends in that 30 degree slice of the sky. Your zodiac sign, or sun sign, is the one the Sun was in when you were born.

Astrology divides the Sun's yearly path into twelve equal signs of 30 degrees each, starting at the March equinox. The dates below are the ones most horoscopes publish, and every page on this site uses the same ones. They are a convention: because the calendar and the solar year never line up exactly, the Sun's real entry into a sign falls within a day of its first date and is often a day earlier. In UTC the Sun entered Aries on March 20, not March 21, in 54 of the 66 years from 1970 to 2035. Every sign page lists the real entry time for each year.
If your birthday is the first or last day of a sign, you were born on what astrologers call a cusp. You belong to one sign or the other, never both, and the only way to know which is to check the Sun's position for your birth year, time and place. The finder above gives the exact minute of the change when you add your birth year, so you can compare it with your birth time.
| Sign | Dates | Element | Ruling planet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries ♈, the ram | March 21 to April 19 | Fire | Mars |
| Taurus ♉, the bull | April 20 to May 20 | Earth | Venus |
| Gemini ♊, the twins | May 21 to June 20 | Air | Mercury |
| Cancer ♋, the crab | June 21 to July 22 | Water | Moon |
| Leo ♌, the lion | July 23 to August 22 | Fire | Sun |
| Virgo ♍, the maiden | August 23 to September 22 | Earth | Mercury |
| Libra ♎, the scales | September 23 to October 22 | Air | Venus |
| Scorpio ♏, the scorpion | October 23 to November 21 | Water | Pluto (traditionally Mars) |
| Sagittarius ♐, the archer | November 22 to December 21 | Fire | Jupiter |
| Capricorn ♑, the sea goat | December 22 to January 19 | Earth | Saturn |
| Aquarius ♒, the water bearer | January 20 to February 18 | Air | Uranus (traditionally Saturn) |
| Pisces ♓, the fish | February 19 to March 20 | Water | Neptune (traditionally Jupiter) |
What is my zodiac sign?
Find the range in the table that holds your birthday. Someone born on November 2 is a Scorpio; someone born on February 25 is a Pisces. That sign is your sun sign, the one magazines and apps mean when they ask for your sign, and the one that horoscope columns are written for.
Two situations need a closer look. The first is a cusp birthday, such as March 20 or December 21, where the Sun changed signs within a day of your birth. The second is a birth far from where the published dates assume, say in Australia or Japan, where the local date can be a day ahead of the moment the Sun actually crossed. In both cases the exact birth time and place settle it, and a birth chart calculator gives the definite answer.
There is also a common mix-up worth clearing: your Chinese zodiac animal is a different system altogether. It runs on a twelve year cycle tied to the lunar new year, so a person can be a Scorpio sun sign and a Year of the Dragon at the same time. This page is about the Western zodiac only.

Every sign belongs to one of four elements, a grouping that goes back to Greek natural philosophy. The elements repeat in the same order around the wheel, fire then earth then air then water, so each element holds three signs spaced four signs apart. Astrologers read the element as a sign's basic temperament.
- Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): energy, enthusiasm and the urge to act first and think later. Fire signs warm a room and lose interest when nothing is happening.
- Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): patience, practicality and trust in what can be touched, built and counted. Earth signs are the ones still there after the excitement fades.
- Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): ideas, conversation and perspective. Air signs connect people and concepts, and can live in their heads more than their bodies.
- Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): feeling, intuition and memory. Water signs read the emotional weather of a situation before anyone says a word.
Zodiac sign compatibility by element
The quickest way to read zodiac compatibility is by element. Signs of the same element share a pace and a set of values, so tradition treats them as natural matches: fire with fire, earth with earth, air with air, water with water. The next best pairs are the complementary elements, fire with air and earth with water, because air feeds fire and water nourishes earth. Fire with water and earth with air need the most translation, which is not the same as being doomed.
The opposite sign is a special case. Aries and Libra, Taurus and Scorpio and the other four pairs across the wheel share a modality and complementary elements, and astrologers describe them as the strongest pull with the most friction. The compatibility hub scores every one of the 78 sign pairs this way, and the element pages for fire, earth, air and water list the pairings inside each element. Real compatibility reading goes further, to the Moon, Venus and Mars of both people.
| Element | Signs | Easiest matches |
|---|---|---|
| Fire | Aries, Leo, Sagittarius | Fire and air |
| Earth | Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn | Earth and water |
| Air | Gemini, Libra, Aquarius | Air and fire |
| Water | Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces | Water and earth |
The three modalities: cardinal, fixed and mutable
The second grouping is modality, sometimes called quality. It describes how a sign uses its element rather than what that element is. The modalities follow the seasons in the Northern Hemisphere: the cardinal signs begin each season, the fixed signs hold its middle, and the mutable signs carry it into the next.
Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) start things. They take the initiative and set direction, and they can tire of a project once it runs on its own. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) sustain. They are loyal, persistent and hard to move once decided. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) adapt. They are flexible and resourceful, and they can scatter their energy across too many options.
Put element and modality together and every sign has a unique pair. Aries is cardinal fire, the spark that starts the blaze. Leo is fixed fire, the steady hearth. Sagittarius is mutable fire, the flame that jumps to the next field. Reading a sign this way is more useful than memorizing adjectives, because it explains why two fire signs can still feel so different.
Zodiac signs in order, and what each one means
The order starts at the March equinox and follows the Sun through the year. Each sign page goes into dates, traits, love, work and friendship in detail. Here is each sign with its glyph, its symbol and the one line version of what tradition says it is about.
- Aries ♈, the ram: courage and beginnings. The first sign acts on instinct and likes to lead.
- Taurus ♉, the bull: steadiness and pleasure. It builds slowly, values comfort and does not like to be rushed.
- Gemini ♊, the twins: curiosity and talk. It collects ideas, people and stories, and needs variety.
- Cancer ♋, the crab: care and belonging. It protects its people and remembers how everything felt.
- Leo ♌, the lion: warmth and self expression. It wants to create, to be seen and to make others shine.
- Virgo ♍, the maiden: skill and service. It notices details, improves things and shows love by helping.
- Libra ♎, the scales: balance and partnership. It seeks fairness, beauty and good company.
- Scorpio ♏, the scorpion: depth and transformation. It wants the truth under the surface and commits completely.
- Sagittarius ♐, the archer: freedom and meaning. It travels, questions and looks for the bigger picture.
- Capricorn ♑, the sea goat: ambition and structure. It plays the long game and earns its authority.
- Aquarius ♒, the water bearer: independence and ideals. It thinks ahead of the crowd and values friendship.
- Pisces ♓, the fish: empathy and imagination. It dissolves boundaries, for better and for worse.
Where the zodiac comes from
The zodiac began as a calendar of the sky. Babylonian astronomers tracked the Sun, Moon and planets against a band of constellations along the ecliptic, the Sun's apparent path through the year. By around the fifth century BC they had standardized that band into twelve equal divisions of 30 degrees, which made it possible to calculate positions rather than only observe them.
Greek astronomers inherited the system and gave the signs most of the names we still use. The word zodiac comes from the Greek zodiakos kyklos, the circle of little animals, because most of the signs are creatures. In the second century AD the astronomer Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos, a textbook that shaped Western astrology for well over a thousand years, including the elements, modalities and planetary rulers you see on this page.
Three planets were added much later. Uranus was discovered in 1781, Neptune in 1846 and Pluto in 1930, and modern astrologers assigned them as rulers of Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio. Traditional astrologers still use the older rulers, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, which is why you will see both listed.
Tropical and sidereal zodiacs, and the Ophiuchus question
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons: Aries always begins at the March equinox, wherever the stars happen to be. Over centuries the Earth's axis slowly wobbles, a motion called precession, and the equinox drifts backward against the constellations by about one degree every 72 years. The signs and the constellations they are named after are now roughly 24 degrees apart.
Vedic astrology, the tradition of India, uses the sidereal zodiac instead, which stays aligned with the stars. That is why many people find their Vedic sun sign is the sign before their Western one. Neither is a correction of the other; they measure from different starting points.
The same drift explains the Ophiuchus story that resurfaces every few years. The Sun does pass through the constellation Ophiuchus, the serpent bearer, for part of late November and early December. But the zodiac signs were never the constellations themselves. They are twelve equal 30 degree sections of the year, so adding a thirteenth constellation does not change anyone's sign in the tropical system.
Sun, moon and rising: your big 3
Your sun sign describes your core identity in astrology, but a birth chart places every planet in a sign. Two other placements matter most. The moon sign, where the Moon was at birth, is read as your emotional nature and what you need to feel safe. The rising sign, the sign coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment of birth, is read as how you meet the world and how others first see you.
Together these are called the big 3. They explain why two people born on the same day can feel so different: the Moon changes sign every two to three days and the rising sign roughly every two hours. Your birthday gives the Sun, your birth date and place give the Moon on most days, and the rising sign needs the birth time too. The moon sign and rising sign calculators in this hub show all three on one result card, and the free birth chart adds every planet.
Common zodiac sign myths
A few ideas about the zodiac turn up everywhere and do not survive a closer look at how astrology itself works.
- Your sun sign is the whole story. It is one placement out of ten planets, plus the rising sign and the houses. Astrologers treat it as a starting point, which is why so many people feel their sign only half fits.
- Cusp babies are a blend of two signs. The Sun is in one sign or the other at the moment of birth, never both. Someone who feels like both usually has the Moon, Mercury or Venus in the neighboring sign.
- Some signs can never get along. Element and modality describe how easily two people understand each other, not whether they can. Plenty of lasting couples are a square or an opposition.
- NASA changed the zodiac. The Ophiuchus story is about constellations, and Western astrology's signs are twelve equal slices of the year measured from the March equinox. Nothing about your sign changed.
- A horoscope for your sign is written for you. Sun sign columns are written for a twelfth of everyone. A horoscope worked out from your own birth chart is a different, far more personal thing.
How to read your sign without taking it too literally
Zodiac descriptions work best as a mirror, not a verdict. A good sign profile names tendencies you can check against your own life: does the Virgo habit of fixing things describe how you handle stress, or not at all? Where it fits, it gives you language for something you already sensed. Where it does not, your other placements usually explain why.
Astrology is a symbolic tradition rather than a science, and no reputable astrologer claims a sign decides your fate, your health or your compatibility with anyone. The same goes for the traditional ratings the sign pages mention, such as exaltation, detriment and fall: they are old symbolic shorthand for how comfortable a planet is in a sign, not measurements, so test them against your own chart. Used with that in mind, the zodiac is a long-lived vocabulary for temperament and timing that many people find helps them reflect on how they love, work and change.

What dates are the 12 zodiac signs?
Aries March 21 to April 19, Taurus April 20 to May 20, Gemini May 21 to June 20, Cancer June 21 to July 22, Leo July 23 to August 22, Virgo August 23 to September 22, Libra September 23 to October 22, Scorpio October 23 to November 21, Sagittarius November 22 to December 21, Capricorn December 22 to January 19, Aquarius January 20 to February 18, Pisces February 19 to March 20. The first day of each can move by a day with the year.
Which zodiac signs are soulmates?
No pair of signs is fated, and astrology does not promise anyone a soulmate by sign. Tradition does favor some pairings: two signs of the same element, fire with air and earth with water, and opposite signs such as Aries and Libra, which share a modality and complete each other. A real match reads the whole of two charts, the Moon and Venus above all, which is what the compatibility pages and the soulmate reading do.
Which zodiac sign is the rarest?
No sign is meaningfully rare. Signs cover between 29 and 32 days, and births are spread fairly evenly across the year, with small seasonal bumps that vary by country. Any ranking you see online reflects one data set and one place, not something built into astrology.
Can my zodiac sign change?
Your sun sign is fixed by when and where you were born, so it does not change over your life. What can change is your understanding of it: people born on a cusp sometimes learn from an exact chart that they belong to the neighboring sign.
What is the order of the zodiac signs?
Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. The order starts at the March equinox and follows the Sun through the year, so Aries is first and Pisces closes the cycle just before spring begins again.
Why do some websites give different zodiac dates?
The Sun enters each sign at a slightly different time every year, and some sites round to the earliest or latest likely day. Sites using the sidereal zodiac of Vedic astrology are more than three weeks off from Western dates because they start the count from the stars instead of the equinox.
