The short answer

Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place you were born. It changes about every two hours, so you need your birth time and birth town. Enter them in the calculator above to find your rising sign and its degree.

What is a rising sign?

As the Earth turns, the whole zodiac appears to rise in the east and set in the west once a day, just as the Sun does. The sign coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute you were born is your rising sign, and the exact degree is your ascendant. It is the starting point of your birth chart: the first house begins there, and every other house follows from it.

Astrology reads the rising sign as the way you meet the world. It is your instinctive style, your first impression, the lens you see new situations through and often your appearance and body language. People who know you only a little will often recognize your rising sign before your sun sign.

Why the rising sign needs an exact birth time

The ascendant moves through all twelve signs in about 24 hours, roughly one sign every two hours on average. But the average hides a lot. Because the ecliptic is tilted against the equator, some signs rise quickly and others slowly, and the effect grows with latitude. In the Northern Hemisphere, signs from Capricorn to Gemini can rise in well under two hours, while signs from Cancer to Sagittarius take longer. Far enough north, one sign can rise in less than an hour.

That is why a birth time that is off by even twenty minutes can change the result when you were born near the edge of a sign. This calculator checks for that: if a birth ten minutes earlier or later would give a different rising sign, it tells you so you can double check your time.

Where to find your birth time

If you do not know your time, the rising sign cannot be worked out, but your sun and moon signs usually can. Here are the usual places to look, roughly in order of reliability:

  1. Your birth certificate. Many US states record the time on the long form certificate, which you can request from the vital records office of the state where you were born.
  2. Hospital records, if the hospital still holds them.
  3. A baby book, family bible, birth announcement or the memory of a parent or relative.
  4. If none exist, astrologers sometimes estimate a time from major life events, a process called rectification.

Rising sign vs sun sign

Your sun sign is your core identity and life purpose in astrology, the thing you grow into. Your rising sign is how you approach life and how others first experience you. When the two are different elements, people often feel that their sun sign description does not fit how they come across. A Capricorn with Leo rising may seem warm and dramatic at a party, with the Capricorn seriousness only showing over time.

Your rising sign also decides which areas of life each planet falls in, through the houses. That is why astrologers consider it the most personal point in the chart, and why horoscopes written for your rising sign often fit better than ones written for your sun sign.

What each rising sign is like

These are traditional sketches, the first impression each ascendant is said to give. Planets near your ascendant, and the planet that rules your rising sign, change the picture a lot, which is what a full chart reading looks at.

Taurus risingCalm, grounded, unhurried
Gemini risingChatty, curious, quick witted
Cancer risingGentle, protective, reserved at first
Leo risingWarm, confident, hard to miss

Scorpio risingIntense, private, magnetic

What are my big 3 signs?

Your big 3 are your sun, moon and rising signs, the three placements astrologers read first. The Sun is your core identity and what you are growing into. The Moon is your emotional nature, what you need to feel safe and how you react before you think. The rising sign is your approach and first impression, and it sets the houses of the whole chart.

They need different amounts of information. The Sun needs only your birthday. The Moon needs the date and usually the place, since it changes sign every two to three days. The rising sign needs the exact time and place, since it changes about every two hours. Fill in all three fields above and the result card shows your full big 3 at once.

Is a rising sign rare? It depends on latitude

Every sign rises once a day, but not for the same length of time. At US latitudes Aries and Pisces cross the horizon in barely more than an hour, while Leo through Scorpio each take around two and a half. So, if births were spread evenly through the day, Aries, Pisces, Taurus and Aquarius rising would be the rarer ascendants in the US and Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio the more common ones. South of the equator the pattern reverses. Each rising sign page gives the measured times for its sign.

How this ascendant calculator works

The calculator turns your local birth time into a precise moment using historical time zone and daylight saving rules for your birthplace, then works out the local sidereal time and the point of the ecliptic crossing your eastern horizon at your latitude. It is the same calculation behind Soulether's free birth chart, and it runs entirely in your browser.

Questions people ask

Is the ascendant the same as the rising sign?

Yes. The ascendant is the exact degree of the zodiac on the eastern horizon at birth, and the rising sign is the sign that degree falls in. People use the two words interchangeably.

Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?

Not reliably. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so a date alone could match any of the twelve. If you can narrow the time to a window, try both ends of it and see whether the result changes.

Why does my rising sign differ between websites?

Usually because of the time zone. Older births in places that changed their clocks, observed wartime time or used local mean time can be an hour or more off if a site ignores history. Picking your town from the list gives this calculator the right zone.

What is the luckiest rising sign?

There is no luckiest rising sign in astrology. Some traditions call Sagittarius and Pisces rising fortunate because Jupiter rules them, but luck in a chart comes from where Jupiter and Venus sit and how they connect, not from the ascendant alone.

Is my data stored?

Not by the calculator. It runs in your browser, and the calculation itself sends your birth details nowhere. They do go into the page address so you can bookmark or share the result, so anything that records page addresses sees them too: your browser history, and our analytics if you accepted it. The place search sends only the town name you type.

Does the rising sign matter for horoscopes?

Many astrologers say it matters more than the sun sign for daily and monthly horoscopes, because it sets your houses. Reading a horoscope for your rising sign shows which area of life a transit touches.
