How this zodiac compatibility test works

Most online compatibility tests hand you a number without saying where it came from. This one is built from three rules of traditional astrology, and every score on this site, in the test, the chart, the sign pages and the 78 pair guides, comes from the same calculation. Pick the same two signs tomorrow and you get the same result, because nothing in it is random. And because every factor is shared, the order does not matter: Leo and Aries is the same match as Aries and Leo.

The first and heaviest factor is the distance between the two signs on the zodiac wheel. Astrologers call these distances aspects. Signs four places apart share an element and form a trine, the most harmonious relation. Signs two places apart form a sextile and pair complementary elements, fire with air or earth with water. Signs six places apart sit opposite each other, which brings attraction and polarity. Signs three places apart form a square: same modality, clashing elements. The same-element pairs, the trines, lead the whole chart at 86 to 89. Aries and Cancer are both cardinal, both want to start things, but Aries starts by charging ahead and Cancer starts by securing the home.
