The short answer

Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in when you were born. Enter your birth date and place in the calculator above to find it. The Moon changes sign every two to three days, so if your birth time is unknown, the calculator checks the whole day and tells you if both signs are possible.

What is a moon sign?

In astrology the Sun describes who you are becoming and the Moon describes what you need. Your moon sign is read as your emotional nature: how you react before you think, what comforts you, how you behave when tired or hurt, and what makes a place feel like home. Many people find their moon sign describes their private self more accurately than their sun sign does, because the Sun shows up in public and the Moon at home.

Take two people with a Leo Sun. One has the Moon in Cancer and needs closeness, family and reassurance. The other has the Moon in Aquarius and needs space, friendship and room to think. Both are Leos, but they feel very different to live with.

What is my moon sign if I don't know my birth time?

The Moon moves fast: about 13 degrees a day, so it passes through all twelve signs in roughly 27 and a half days and spends about two and a half days in each. On more than half the days of the year it stays in one sign from midnight to midnight, and your birth date alone is enough. On the days it changes sign, the time matters.

This calculator handles that honestly. Without a birth time it checks your birth date from local midnight to midnight in the time zone of your birthplace. If the Moon stayed in one sign all day, that is your moon sign. If it changed sign, you see both signs and the local time of the change, so you can compare with anything you know, such as whether you were born in the morning or at night. A birth certificate, hospital record or baby book often has the exact time.

Moon signs by element

A quick way into your moon sign is its element, which describes the kind of emotional care you need.

  • Fire Moon (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): feelings come out fast and need action. You feel better by doing something, and you need enthusiasm and encouragement from the people close to you.
  • Earth Moon (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): feelings settle through routine and the body. Good food, a tidy space, work done well and dependable people make you feel safe.
  • Air Moon (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): feelings are processed by talking and thinking. You need conversation, perspective and someone who listens without rushing you.
  • Water Moon (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): feelings are deep and absorbent. You need emotional honesty, privacy and time to recover from other people's moods.

Moon in each sign: what every moon sign means

Once you have the sign, this is the traditional reading of each one. Treat it as a first sketch of your emotional style, then check it against what you know about yourself.

Moon signWhat it means
Moon in AriesQuick, physical feelings. You react first and recover fast, calm down by moving or settling an argument, and find long waiting hard to bear.
Moon in TaurusFeelings settle through the body. You need good food, a familiar place and unhurried time, and you resist change until it has proved itself safe.
Moon in GeminiYou process feeling by talking it through, writing it down or joking about it. A day without people or new information leaves you restless.
Moon in CancerThe Moon is at home here, so feelings run deep and tidal. You remember how everything felt, protect your people hard and need a place that is truly yours.
Moon in LeoYou need warmth, praise and room to be seen. Feelings are generous and dramatic, and being ignored hurts more than a quarrel.
Moon in VirgoYou steady yourself by being useful and putting things in order. Worry shows up as lists, and love shows up as quiet practical help.
Moon in LibraCalm comes from harmony. You read the mood of a room at once, avoid open conflict and feel unsettled until a tension is resolved.
Moon in ScorpioFeelings are intense, private and long lived. Trust is earned slowly, hurt is not forgotten and, once you commit, you commit completely.
Moon in SagittariusYou need space, humor and something to look forward to. A plan for a trip lifts your mood, and feeling fenced in sours it quickly.
Moon in CapricornYou keep feelings in reserve and show care through reliability. Security comes from what you have built, and you rarely ask for help.
Moon in AquariusYou step back to understand a feeling before you share it. Friends and freedom matter as much as closeness, and you need room to be yourself.
Moon in PiscesYou absorb the moods around you like weather. Music, water and quiet time help you find your own feelings again.

Moon sign compatibility in relationships

Astrologers often look at the Moon first when comparing two charts, because it shows whether two people can comfort each other. A partner whose Moon sits in a sign that shares or complements your Moon's element tends to understand your needs without explanation. Two Moons that clash, such as a fire Moon that wants to talk it out now and a water Moon that needs time alone, can still work well, but the couple has to learn each other's language for feeling safe.

How this moon sign calculator works

The calculator uses the same astronomy as Soulether's free birth chart. It converts your birth time and place into an exact moment, using historical time zone rules including daylight saving time, then computes where the Moon was against the tropical zodiac. The lunar position comes from published astronomical algorithms with the main corrections for the Moon's irregular orbit, and it has been checked against a standard astronomy library to within about a tenth of a degree across 1900 to 2100.

Everything runs in your browser, and the calculation itself sends your birth details nowhere. They go into the page address, so you can bookmark or share your result. No email, no sign up and nothing to buy before you see your answer.

The Moon on the day it changes sign

If you do know your birth time, the calculator still checks your whole birth date. When the Moon changed sign during that day, it says so and gives the local time of the change next to your result. Born within an hour or two of it, your moon sign is only as reliable as the time on your birth certificate, and it is worth reading both moon signs to see which describes you better.

Questions people ask

Is my moon sign more important than my sun sign?

Neither is more important; they describe different things. The Sun is read as your identity and direction, the Moon as your emotional needs. Most astrologers read the two together, along with the rising sign.

Why did the calculator give me two possible moon signs?

The Moon changed sign on your birth date, and without an exact time it cannot tell whether you were born before or after the change. The result shows the local time of the change so you can narrow it down.

Does my moon sign ever change?

No. Your natal moon sign is fixed at birth. The Moon keeps moving through the signs every few days, and astrologers read those daily positions as transits to your chart, but your birth Moon stays the same.

What are my big 3 signs?

Your sun, moon and rising signs. This calculator shows all three on its result card: the Sun from your date, the Moon from your date and place, and the rising sign as soon as you add a birth time. The rising sign calculator page explains what each of the three means.

What is the luckiest moon sign?

Astrology has no luckiest moon sign. Tradition rates the Moon as exalted in Taurus and at home in Cancer, which means its themes of comfort and feeling flow easily there, not that those people are luckier. Every moon sign has its own strengths.

Do I need my birth place for the moon sign?

Yes, because the place sets the time zone your birth date is read in. The Moon can be in a different sign at the same clock time in New York and in Sydney.
