The most compatible zodiac signs, ranked by one test

By · Updated October 24, 2026 · How we write these pages

The short answer

The most compatible zodiac signs are the pairs that share an element, called trines. In our test Leo and Sagittarius score highest at 89, then Aries with Leo or Sagittarius, Cancer with Pisces and Scorpio with Pisces at 88. For marriage, Taurus and Capricorn lead on trust. Squares and quincunxes score lowest.

The 12 best zodiac couples, ranked

Every pair of two different signs, 66 in all, scored by the same test that runs on the compatibility hub and in all 78 pair guides. The top twelve are below, and every one of them is a trine: two signs four places apart that share an element. That is not a quirk of this test. Classical astrology has treated the trine as the easiest relation between two signs for as long as it has drawn charts, because two signs of one element run on the same fuel.

The gap between first and twelfth is small, 86 to 89, so read the table as twelve excellent couples rather than a podium. What separates them is the small print: the element itself, whether the two signs start, hold or adapt, and their traditional ruling planets. Leo and Sagittarius edge ahead because the Sun and Jupiter, the two generous planets of classical astrology, add warmth to an already easy fire pairing.

Why couples of the same element get along best

Each of the four elements describes a temperament, and two people with the same temperament spend less energy translating. Fire signs, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, move fast and say what they think, so a fire couple rarely sulks: they argue, laugh and move on. Earth signs, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, show love through reliability, so an earth couple builds trust by doing what they said they would, for years.

Air signs, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, connect through conversation and need room to breathe, which another air sign gives without being asked. Water signs, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, feel first and explain later, and a water couple can understand a mood across the room. The shared element is also the shared weakness: two fire signs can burn out, two earth signs can get stuck, two air signs can avoid feelings and two water signs can drown in them. The best trine couples know which one is theirs.

The best couple in each element

Inside each element the three trine pairs score within a point or two of each other, so the best couple depends less on the number than on what you want the relationship to feel like.

  • Fire: Leo and Sagittarius, 89, the warmest and most playful couple on the wheel. Aries with Leo is the passionate version, Aries with Sagittarius the adventurous one.
  • Earth: Taurus and Capricorn, 87, with the highest trust score in the test. Taurus and Virgo match it overall and are the more affectionate of the two.
  • Air: Gemini and Aquarius, 87, best friends first. Gemini with Libra is the most sociable air couple, and Libra with Aquarius the most balanced.
  • Water: Cancer and Pisces, 88, the gentlest home on the wheel. Scorpio and Pisces score the same and burn hotter; Cancer and Scorpio are the most protective.

The runners-up: sextiles, the best friends of the zodiac

Just behind the trines, at 82 to 84, come the sextiles: signs two places apart whose elements cooperate, fire with air and earth with water. They are not alike, which is exactly why many astrologers rate them as long term matches. A little difference keeps things interesting, and the elements help each other: air feeds fire, water feeds earth.

On friendship, the best sextiles beat every trine. Libra and Sagittarius (95), Aries and Gemini (94), Leo and Libra (93) hold the highest friendship scores in the test. If you want a partner who is also the person you would most like to travel or work with, this is where to look.

Most compatible zodiac signs for marriage

For a marriage, the number that matters is trust, the sub-score built on steadiness and shared values. It is where earth and water pull ahead of fire and air, because those signs treat commitment as something built slowly and kept. The couples with the highest trust are below, with their love score beside it.

Notice that the list is not the same as the overall ranking. Fire and air couples score just as high overall, but their bond rests more on attraction and friendship, and they stay married by keeping life interesting together. Earth and water couples stay married by keeping life steady. Both work; they just need different maintenance.

Opposite signs: the strongest pull, not the easiest match

Opposite signs sit six places apart, directly across the wheel, and they sit near the top of the love column. Aries with Libra and Taurus with Scorpio both score 90 on love, close to the best trines. Their rulers are Mars and Venus, the oldest lovers' pairing in astrology, and each sign has what the other lacks.

Overall, though, opposites land at 70 to 74, because friendship and trust lag behind attraction. Opposites tend to fall for each other fast and then spend the first years learning each other's pace. If a relationship feels electric and exhausting in equal measure, the two signs may well be opposites.

The least compatible zodiac signs

The lowest scores belong to two relations. Squares join signs three places apart, which share a modality but not an element: both want to start, hold or adapt, in directions that clash. Quincunxes join signs five places apart, which share nothing at all, so every habit needs explaining. The eight lowest scoring couples are below.

Low does not mean doomed. A square is often called the aspect of growth, because the friction forces both people to stretch, and the whole birth chart often softens what the sun signs suggest. Treat the score as a map of where patience will be needed, not as a verdict.

What a ranking of signs cannot tell you

Every number on this page compares one placement per person, the sun sign. A real couple is two whole birth charts. Two people whose suns square each other can share a moon element, or have one partner's Venus on the other's sun, and feel easy together for decades. Same-sign couples are another surprise: they score 77 to 79, below both trines and sextiles, because two people with the same strengths also share the same blind spots.

If you know both birth dates, times and places, the birth chart compatibility calculator compares sun, moon, Venus, Mars and rising for the two of you. And if you are still looking for the person, the soulmate quiz starts from your own chart and draws a sketch of the partner it points to.

Questions people ask

By score, Leo and Sagittarius lead at 89; then four couples tie at 88: Aries and Leo, Aries and Sagittarius, Cancer and Pisces, and Scorpio and Pisces, so a strict top three would cut through a tie. Fire and water split the top, and every pair in the top twelve shares an element.

Taurus and Capricorn, on trust: 95, the highest trust score in the test, with 87 overall. Two earth signs who plan, save and stay make the classic marriage match in astrology.

The lowest scores go to Aries and Capricorn (53), Cancer and Aquarius (53), Aries and Virgo (54). They are squares and quincunxes, signs three or five places apart whose elements and paces differ.

Often, yes, for attraction. Opposites score nearly as high on love as the best trines, but lower on friendship and trust, so they tend to start with a spark and need time to build a shared rhythm.

Usually, with a catch. Same-sign couples score 77 to 79 in this test: high on friendship and understanding, a little lower on love, because they share the same blind spots.
