Aries zodiac sign: dates, traits and the first sign of the zodiac

Updated October 10, 2026 · How we write these pages

The short answer

The Aries zodiac sign is the first of the twelve, covering birthdays from March 21 to April 19. It is a cardinal fire sign ruled by Mars, and its symbol is the ram. Astrology describes Aries as bold, direct, competitive and quick to start things, with a short fuse that cools as fast as it flares.

Aries dates and why the zodiac starts here

The Sun enters Aries at the March equinox, usually on March 20 or 21, and leaves around April 19. The zodiac starts here because the tropical system is measured from the equinox, the moment day and night are roughly equal and, in the Northern Hemisphere, spring begins. Aries is the first breath of the new year in astrology's calendar, and almost everything said about the sign grows out of that image of beginnings.

If you were born on March 20 or 21, or on April 19 or 20, check your exact birth year and time. The Sun changes sign at a different minute each year, so a cusp birthday can fall on either side. The sign finder on the zodiac page gives the minute the Sun changed sign in your birth year, and a full birth chart settles it for your birth time and place.

Is Aries a fire sign?

Yes. Aries is one of the three fire signs, with Leo and Sagittarius. Fire in astrology stands for energy, will and enthusiasm, and Aries carries it in its cardinal form: the fire that starts the blaze rather than the one that keeps it going. That combination is why Aries is so often described as the pioneer of the zodiac, the person who volunteers first and figures out the details on the way.

Its ruling planet adds to the picture. Mars is the planet of drive, desire and conflict in astrology, named for the Roman god of war. Aries takes from Mars a taste for challenge and a refusal to wait for permission. Traditional astrologers also say the Sun is exalted in Aries, meaning it works especially strongly there, which fits a sign so focused on vitality and self assertion.

Aries traits: what the personality looks like up close

The classic Aries strengths and blind spots are two sides of the same coin. Notice how each pair below is one quality, turned up or turned down.

StrengthWhen it overshoots
Courage: does the hard thing firstRushes in before the facts are in
Honesty: says what it thinksBluntness that lands as rudeness
Energy: gets a room movingRestlessness once the novelty wears off
Competitive drive: plays to winTurns a casual chat into a contest
Quick to forgive: anger burns out fastForgets that others take longer

The Aries symbol and the myth of the golden ram

The Aries glyph, ♈, is drawn as two curved horns meeting at a point, the head of a ram. Some astrologers also read it as a sprouting seed or as eyebrows meeting a nose, both images of something pushing forward. The body part traditionally linked with the sign is the head, which suits a sign that leads with it.

In Greek myth the ram is Chrysomallos, the flying ram with a golden fleece sent to rescue the children Phrixus and Helle from their stepmother. Helle fell into the sea, at the strait later called the Hellespont, but Phrixus reached safety in Colchis. The ram was sacrificed and placed among the stars, and its fleece became the prize Jason and the Argonauts sailed to find. It is a fitting story for Aries: a rescue, a quest and a prize won by daring.

Aries in love: direct, fast and loyal

Aries tends to fall quickly and say so. There is little game playing in the classic Aries approach to romance; if they like you, you will know. They enjoy the chase, and a partner with a mind of their own keeps them interested far longer than one who agrees with everything. What can surprise people is how protective and loyal an Aries becomes once committed.

The friction points are pace and patience. Aries wants to fix a problem tonight, while some partners need a day to think. Learning to wait without reading the wait as rejection is the classic Aries lesson in relationships.

The classic matches are Libra, its mirror across the wheel, and the other fire signs, but the useful test is pace. A partner whose Moon sits in fire or air keeps up with Aries easily, while a Moon in earth can feel hurried by the same energy.

Aries at work and with money

Aries does its best work at the start of things: launching a product, opening a new office, running the first sprint of a project. Roles with autonomy, clear wins and some physical or competitive edge suit the sign: entrepreneurship, sales, emergency medicine, the military, sports and anything with a deadline. Aries bosses are decisive and fair, and they rarely ask you to do anything they would not do.

The weak spot is the long middle. Maintenance, slow approvals and paperwork can drain an Aries, and impulsive spending is the money version of the same habit. A practical fix many Aries people use is to pair up with a steadier colleague or partner who loves finishing what Aries loves starting.

Growing as an Aries

Astrologers often describe Aries growth as learning from its opposite, Libra: noticing other people's timing, asking before acting, and finding that cooperation can win more than competition. None of that means losing the spark. The most admired Aries traits, courage and honesty, simply land better when they come with a moment's pause.

Aries and the Sun's exaltation

Traditional astrology rates each planet by how comfortable it is in each sign, a scheme called essential dignity. The Sun is exalted in Aries, traditionally at 19 degrees, which means it is honored there, like a guest given the best seat. That is separate from rulership: the Sun rules Leo and is merely celebrated in Aries.

The same scheme rates two planets as ill at ease in Aries. Venus is in detriment, because the planet of harmony meets a sign that puts action first, and Saturn is in fall, because the planet of caution meets a sign that wants to start today. Tradition uses this to explain why Aries reads as vigorous rather than careful.

Aries as a friend and in the family

As a friend, Aries is the one who shows up first and fights your corner hardest. It plans the trip, drags you to the party and tells the person who hurt you exactly what it thinks of them. Aries friendships tend to be lively, honest and occasionally loud, and they survive arguments that would end quieter friendships, because the ram forgets a quarrel by the next morning.

In the family Aries is often the energetic, independent child who wanted to do everything alone, and later the sibling who organizes everyone else. Aries parents encourage courage and self reliance. The friction point at home is the same as everywhere: patience, and remembering that not everyone moves at Aries speed.

Aries best and worst matches

The free compatibility test scores Aries highest with Leo and Sagittarius, the other fire signs, and next with Gemini and Aquarius, the air signs that feed its fire. The hardest pairings by the same test are the squares and quincunxes, where caution, routine or sensitivity meet the ram's pace.

Aries rising and Aries moon

Aries does not have to be your sun sign to show. With Aries rising, the sign on the eastern horizon at birth, you come across as quick, direct and competitive before people know anything else about you, and Mars becomes the ruler of your whole chart.

With the Moon in Aries the fire is private: feelings arrive fast, anger flares and fades, and you calm down by doing something rather than talking it through. Many people with a gentler sun sign recognize themselves in that moon.

Aries season dates by year: when does the Sun enter Aries?

The Sun crosses into Aries at the March equinox, the moment day and night balance, so this table doubles as a list of equinox times. Aries season 2027 starts on March 20 at 20:20 UTC, and Aries season 2028 starts on March 20 at 02:10 UTC.

From 1970 to 2035 the Sun entered Aries as early as March 20 at 01:30 UTC (2032) and as late as March 21 at 06:40 UTC (1971). By date, that is March 20 in 54 of the 66 years and March 21 in the other 12. Times are UTC and good to within 15 minutes, so a birth within a quarter hour of the listed time needs a full birth chart. Before 2007 US daylight saving began in April, so a March 20 birth in the US was on standard time: Eastern is 5 hours behind UTC and Pacific 8. The exceptions are 1974 and 1975, when an energy crisis law started it on January 6 and February 23, and from 2007 on it starts in early March, which makes it 4 and 7.

Questions people ask

Who does Aries usually fall in love with?

Astrology cannot say who anyone marries, but tradition and our compatibility test agree on where Aries finds it easiest: the other fire signs, led by Leo and Sagittarius, then Gemini and Aquarius. Libra, the opposite sign, is the classic magnetic match. The compatibility page goes through every pairing.

Is Aries the same as the March equinox?

Aries begins at the March equinox, so its first day is whichever date the equinox lands on, not a fixed one. In UTC that was March 20 in 54 of the 66 years and March 21 in the other 12 from 1970 to 2035. On that day a birth before the entry time in the table is Pisces and one after it is Aries; shift the time to your birthplace's clock first.

What is the Aries personality like in one sentence?

Aries is brave, frank and impatient: the friend who books the trip, picks the restaurant and is already halfway out the door while everyone else is still deciding.

Why is Aries first in the zodiac?

The tropical zodiac is counted from the March equinox, when the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north. That crossing is zero degrees Aries, so the sign that holds it opens the wheel and the rest follow in order.

What planet rules Aries?

Mars, the planet of drive, desire and conflict in astrology. Mars gives Aries its push to act, compete and protect what it cares about.
