The three water signs

Cancer (about June 21 to July 22), Scorpio (October 23 to November 21) and Pisces (February 19 to March 20) are the fourth, eighth and twelfth signs of the zodiac. Scorpio surprises people most: its intensity and its traditional ruler Mars give it a fiery reputation, but it is fixed water, still and very deep.

What water stands for

Aristotle described water as cold and moist: it flows, takes the shape of its container and wears down stone over time. The medical tradition gave it the phlegmatic temper, calm on the surface. Astrology made water the element of emotion, intuition, memory, the unconscious and the bonds between people that run deeper than words.

Water signs feel first. They read moods, remember how things felt years later and care for people instinctively. The shadow is overwhelm: taking on other people's emotions, holding on to hurt, retreating when the world feels too harsh.
