Life path number calculator: what is my life path number?

Updated October 10, 2026 · How we write these pages

Find your life path number

Enter your birth date. You will see every step of the sum.

The short answer

Enter your birth date and this life path number calculator reduces the month, day and year to single digits, adds them and reduces again, keeping the master numbers 11, 22 and 33. It prints every step, flags karmic debt totals and shows what the add-every-digit method gives, so you can check it by hand.

How to calculate your life path number, step by step

The method here is the one most numerologists teach, and it takes under a minute with a pencil. Nothing about it is secret, and nothing is random: the same date always gives the same number.

  1. Write your birth date as month, day and four-digit year.
  2. Reduce the month to one digit. November, the 11th month, stays 11 because it is a master number.
  3. Reduce the day the same way. The 11th, the 22nd and the 29th (2 + 9 = 11) keep a master number.
  4. Add the four digits of the year, then keep adding until one digit is left, stopping at 11, 22 or 33.
  5. Add the three results. If the total has two digits, add them, stopping early at 11, 22 or 33. What is left is your life path number.

A worked example you can check

Take March 14, 1986. The month gives 3, the day 1 + 4 = 5 and the year 1 + 9 + 8 + 6 = 24, then 2 + 4 = 6. Then 3 + 5 + 6 = 14, then 1 + 4 = 5, so the life path is 5.

Notice the 14 on the way. Numerologists write this result 14/5, the total first and the number second, and 14 is one of the four karmic debt numbers. The life path is still 5, and the 14 is read as a lesson inside it. The calculator prints the same note under your own result when your total passes through 13, 14, 16 or 19.

A master number example: Take October 9, 1990. The month gives 1 + 0 = 1, the day 9 and the year 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. Then 1 + 9 + 1 = 11, so the life path is 11. The sum lands on 11, so it stops there.

Why do life path calculators give different answers?

There are two common methods, and they do not always agree. The one here reduces the month, day and year separately, then adds them. The other adds every digit of the date in a single pass. Most dates come out the same both ways, but master numbers make them split.

Take November 29, 1991. Reducing the parts gives 11 for the month, 11 for the day and 2 for the year, which add to 24 and reduce to 6. Adding every digit at once gives 1 + 1 + 2 + 9 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 1 = 33, a master number. We checked every day from 1940 to 2010: the two methods disagree on about 14% of them. That is why this calculator shows the second method's answer under yours. If they differ, read both pages and keep the one that fits.

The third source is plain error, usually a master number reduced by habit. September 2, 1966 is a 33 by both methods: the year gives 1 + 9 + 6 + 6 = 22, which is kept, and 9 + 2 + 22 = 33. Reduce the 22 to 4 out of habit and you get 6 instead. Check the steps, not just the answer.

Master numbers in your result: 11/2, 22/4 and 33/6

If your result is 11, 22 or 33, the calculator keeps it and says so. Numerologists write these 11/2, 22/4 and 33/6, because each is read as a heightened form of the digit it would reduce to. Tradition describes 11 as intuitive and idealistic, 22 as a builder of large and practical things, and 33 as a devoted teacher, with more potential and more pressure than the plain digit.

You do not need to feel exceptional to have one. Many people with a master number recognize the root digit in their ordinary days, and that is a normal way to read it.

Karmic debt numbers on the way: 13, 14, 16 and 19

When the total of the three parts is 13, 14, 16 or 19, some numerologists read a karmic debt alongside the life path: 13/4, 14/5, 16/7 and 19/1. Each is said to mark a lesson to work through. They are common: 6.3% of calendar days pass through 13, 6.3% through 14, 6.3% through 16 and 5.3% through 19 by this method. The calculator flags yours, and the karmic debt numbers page explains each one.

Life path 1, the pioneer

Keywords: independence, initiative, courage. A 1 starts things: the business, the move, the conversation nobody else would open, and it is at its best with a goal of its own. The challenge is going it alone, hearing every offer of help as interference and every compromise as defeat. Natural matches, read by root: the 3 and the 5. About one calendar day in 9 gives a 1.

Life path 2, the peacemaker

Keywords: partnership, tact, sensitivity. A 2 reads the room before anyone speaks and holds groups together with a patience others mistake for passivity. Its challenge is self-doubt, swallowing its own view to keep the peace until resentment says it instead. Natural matches, read by root: the 4, the 6 and the 8. About one calendar day in 22 gives a 2.

Life path 3, the communicator

Keywords: expression, creativity, humor. A 3 turns experience into stories, jokes, designs and songs, and people come back for the energy it brings. The challenge is scattering that energy over ten projects and finishing none, and hiding hurt behind charm. Natural matches, read by root: the 1, the 5, the 6 and the 9. About one calendar day in 9 gives a 3.

Life path 4, the builder

Keywords: structure, discipline, reliability. A 4 turns a plan into a building, a budget or a routine that still works in ten years, and others trust it with the details. Life path 5, the explorer

Keywords: freedom, curiosity, change. A 5 adapts faster than anyone, learns by doing, and carries news, travel and fresh ideas into every circle. Life path 6, the nurturer

About one calendar day in 10 gives a 6.

Life path 7, the seeker

Keywords: inquiry, analysis, inner life. A 7 asks what is underneath, studies until it understands, and trusts slowly but completely. The challenge is isolation, a skepticism that shuts out the very closeness a 7 wants. Natural matches, read by root: the 4. About one calendar day in 9 gives a 7.

Life path 8, the powerhouse

Keywords: power, ambition, results. An 8 organizes people and money toward a goal and handles pressure that would flatten most numbers. How common is each life path number?

The method does not hand out the twelve numbers evenly. Across every calendar day from 1940 to 2010, the 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9 each come out on about 11.1% of days, the 2 on only 4.6%, less than the master number 11, and the 33 is the rarest result at 0.9%. These are shares of days, not people, for the month, day and year method.

Life path number vs zodiac sign

Both come from your birthday, and they answer different questions. Your sun sign uses only the day and month, places you in one of twelve signs and describes your core temperament. Your life path uses the year as well, places you on one of twelve numbers and describes the road and its lessons. Two people born on the same day of different years share a sign and often have different life paths.

When the two agree, a life path 1 who is a Leo or a life path 7 who is a Pisces, readers say the theme is loud and clear. When they disagree, a cautious 4 who is a restless Sagittarius, the interesting reading is in how the two get along. A birth chart goes further than either, with the moon, the rising sign and every planet.

What is the luckiest life path number?

None, in the sense of a number that brings good fortune. Numerology describes tendencies, not luck. The 8 is the number most linked with money and material success, and the 3 with joy and easy opportunity, which is why they are the usual answers, but both come with lessons, and an 8 is no more likely to be rich than anyone else.

A better question is which number's strengths you are using. A 4 who builds patiently, a 9 who gives with limits and a 7 who trusts one person each look lucky from outside, because the number is working for them instead of against them.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate my life path number?

Reduce your birth month, day and year to single digits separately, keeping 11, 22 and 33. Add the three results and reduce again until one digit is left, unless you land on a master number. The calculator above does it and shows each step.

How to actually calculate life path number correctly?

Reduce the parts before you add them. Adding every digit at once is a second method, and it disagrees on some dates, mostly where a master number hides in the month, day or year. Neither is wrong, but say which one you used.

What is Donald Trump's life path number?

Donald Trump was born on June 14, 1946. The month gives 6, the day 1 + 4 = 5 and the year 1 + 9 + 4 + 6 = 20, then 2. Then 6 + 5 + 2 = 13, which reduces to 4, so he is a life path 4 written 13/4, a karmic debt total.

What if I do not know my exact birth date?

An approximate date gives an approximate number, and it can be wrong. If you are unsure, try each possible date and see whether one result describes you better, but treat it as a guess.

Can my life path number change?

No. It comes from your birth date, so it stays the same for life. What changes is your personal year, every January 1, and how you relate to your number as you get older.
