Name numerology: your destiny, soul urge and personality numbers
By Nick Krüger · Updated October 24, 2026 · How we write these pages
The short answer
Name numerology turns each letter of your full birth name into a number from 1 to 9 on the Pythagorean chart. All the letters give your destiny, or expression, number; the vowels give your soul urge; the consonants give your personality number. Type your name above and the calculator shows each letter's value and every sum.
Find your name numbers
Type a full name as written at birth. Each letter has a fixed value from 1 to 9.
What is name numerology?
Name numerology is the half of numerology that reads letters instead of dates. Your birth date describes the road, your name describes the traveler: how you work, what you want and how you come across. Each letter has a value, and the sums of different groups of letters give three numbers.
Numerologists use the full name as it appears on the birth certificate, because the tradition holds that it carries your original pattern. A name you chose later, through marriage, a nickname or a stage name, is read as a second layer on top of it, not a replacement.
The Pythagorean letter chart
Write the alphabet in rows of nine and each column gets a value: A is 1, B is 2 and so on to I, which is 9, then J starts again at 1. Accented letters count as the plain letter. The calculator uses this chart.
| Value | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A, J, S |
| 2 | B, K, T |
| 3 | C, L, U |
| 4 | D, M, V |
| 5 | E, N, W |
| 6 | F, O, X |
| 7 | G, P, Y |
| 8 | H, Q, Z |
| 9 | I, R |

Read my birth chartHow to calculate your destiny number (expression number)
The destiny number and the expression number are the same thing under two names. Add the value of every letter in your full birth name, then reduce the total to one digit, keeping 11, 22 or 33.
Take Maya Elena Torres. Maya is 4 + 1 + 7 + 1 = 13. Elena is 5 + 3 + 5 + 5 + 1 = 19. Torres is 2 + 6 + 9 + 9 + 5 + 1 = 32. The total is 64, then 6 + 4 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1, so her destiny number is 1. Some numerologists reduce each name first and then add, which gives the same answer here; where it does not, the calculator follows the sum of every letter.
What your destiny number means
The destiny number is read as your natural abilities and the way you use them, the toolkit you bring to your life path. The meanings follow the same numbers as everywhere else in numerology, turned toward action.
| Destiny number | Your talent in action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Starting, leading, working independently |
| 2 | Diplomacy, partnership, careful detail |
| 3 | Words, art, humor, persuasion |
| 4 | Organizing, building systems, seeing a task through |
| 5 | Selling, adapting, communicating across groups |
| 6 | Teaching, caring, making things beautiful and fair |
| 7 | Research, analysis, specialist skill |
| 8 | Managing money, people and large projects |
| 9 | Inspiring, advocating, creative vision |
| 11 | Inspiring others through insight |
| 22 | Building at scale |
| 33 | Teaching and healing by example |
Soul urge number: what you want underneath
The soul urge number, also called the heart's desire, comes from the vowels in your full name. It is read as your private motive, the thing you want even when you would not say it out loud, and many people find it the most surprising number in their chart.
For Maya Elena Torres the vowels are A, A, E, E, A, O and E: 1 + 1 + 5 + 5 + 1 + 6 + 5 = 24, then 6. A soul urge of 6 wants to care for people and to belong to a home, which sits underneath a destiny number of 1 that looks independent from outside.
The letter Y is the usual argument. This calculator counts Y as a consonant unless your name has no other vowel, as in Lynn or Rhys, where Y is the only vowel sound. Other traditions decide by sound, so Mary's Y would be a vowel. If your name has a Y, it is worth checking both.
Personality number: the first impression
The personality number comes from the consonants and is read as the outer layer, how people read you before they know you. For Maya, the consonants M, Y, L, N, T, R, R and S add to 40, then 4: people first see someone steady and reliable, whatever her 1 and 6 are doing underneath.
A gap between the personality and the soul urge is common, and it explains a familiar experience: being told you seem calm when you feel anything but, or being taken for shy when you are only waiting your turn.
Karmic lessons: the numbers missing from your name
Look at the letter values in your name and note which digits from 1 to 9 never appear. Numerologists call those missing numbers karmic lessons: qualities you are said to have less of naturally and to need to develop. Maya Elena Torres has letters worth 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9, but no 8, the value of H, Q and Z, so her karmic lesson is the 8, learning to handle money and authority.
Most names miss one or two digits. A name that misses none is read as well balanced, and a digit that appears many times as an intensified trait. The calculator above lists your missing digits under the three numbers, so you do not have to count.
The same calculator watches for karmic debt in the name sums. If your letters add to 13, 14, 16 or 19 before reducing, or pass through one on the way, as a total of 49 does on its way to 13 and then 4, it says so on that number's row. Read a debt in the expression number as a lesson attached to your talents, in the soul urge as one attached to what you want, and in the personality as one attached to how you come across.
Choosing a baby name with numerology
Some parents run shortlisted names through a calculator. If you do, pair the name with the birth date, since the life path is fixed and the name is the part you choose. A name whose expression number complements the life path, a steadying 4 or 6 for a restless 5, for example, is the usual numerological advice. It should never outweigh the name you love.
Does changing your name change your numbers?
In Pythagorean numerology your birth name stays your core reading for life. A new name, through marriage or choice, adds a second set of numbers that numerologists read as the energy you are stepping into. In Chaldean numerology, by contrast, the name you use now is the main one, which is why some people choose a new spelling to reach a number they want.
If you run both names in the calculator, notice what changed. A married name that moves the expression number from 7 to 3, for example, would be read as a private person taking on a more public, social role.
Name numerology and your life path
The name numbers mean most when read next to the life path from your birth date. When the destiny number and life path match, the talents fit the road and life tends to feel coherent. When they differ, numerologists read the tension as a source of growth: a life path 4 with a destiny number of 5 has a builder's road and an improviser's tools, and does best in work that needs both.
