15-20-5 karmic tail: the rebel and making peace with your roots
By Nick Krüger · Updated November 7, 2026 · How we write these pages
The short answer
The 15-20-5 karmic tail is the rebel, and it is the most common of the 26. It describes broken ties with your family and its rules, a life defined by pushing against where you come from. The Devil, Judgement and the Hierophant on its ray ask you to make peace with your roots.
Do you carry the 15-20-5 tail?
Give your birth date and see which of the 26 karmic tails is yours.

Why is 15-20-5 the most common karmic tail?
No tail is reached by more birth dates. In our count of all 26,664 dates from 1940 to 2012, 2,595 carry it: 9.73 percent, about 1 in 10. It needs a bottom corner of 5 and a center of 10, and that happens whenever the day number, month and year number add up to 23, 32, 41 or 50 (all reduce to 5), plus a handful of dates where they add up to 5 itself. So many combinations lead here that it turns up in every single year of that range.
The calculation for 18 August 1977: day 18, month 8, year 1 + 9 + 7 + 7 = 24, reduced to 6. D = 18 + 8 + 6 = 32, reduced to 5. E = 18 + 8 + 6 + 5 = 37, reduced to 10. Then J = D + E = 15 and R = D + J = 20. Another example is 29 March 2007, where 11 + 3 + 9 = 23.
The rebel's story
If this is your tail, you may have spent years defining yourself against your family. Their religion, their politics, their idea of a proper job or a proper marriage. Perhaps you left early, or stayed and fought, or simply went quiet and lived a different life. Sometimes it runs the other way, and the family pushed you out for not fitting in.
The schools tell it as a past life in which someone broke with their clan or faith and was cut off, or cut others off. As the tradition's image it explains a common feeling with this tail: not belonging, and a need to prove you are free. The lesson is not to give in to the family's rules. It is to stop being run by the fight with them.

Decode my matrixThe three numbers and their roles
Closest to the center is Arcana 15, the Devil: desire, charisma and the pull of the forbidden. It is the rebel's fuel, and it makes this tail magnetic and hard to tame. In the minus it can mean doing the opposite just because it is the opposite.
The middle is Arcana 20, Judgement, the energy of family, roots and calling. In this position it carries the old rupture: judging your relatives, being judged by them, and carrying their story as if it were your own.
At the bottom, the karmic task, sits Arcana 5, the Hierophant: tradition, teaching and values. The task is surprising for a rebel. It asks you to find the traditions worth keeping, and to become a teacher of your own values rather than only an opponent of others'.
The rebel in love, at work and at home
In love, people with 15-20-5 often choose partners their families would not, sometimes on purpose. Relationships can become part of the rebellion, which puts a heavy load on them. The question to ask is whether you chose this person or chose against someone.
At work, this is the entrepreneur, the reformer, the person who questions every rule. That is valuable. The minus is clashing with every boss and every structure, and never building anything because building means accepting some rules. The Hierophant task suggests the strongest careers come when you create your own tradition: a method, a school, a company with values you defend.
At home, the work is reconnection in whatever form is safe. Not necessarily closeness, but an end to the war.
How do you make peace with your roots?
Peace is not surrender. A few ways in:
- Find three things your family gave you that you actually value: a skill, a habit, a way of laughing.
- Learn your family's history. Rebels are often surprised to find a rebel a generation or two back.
- Separate the rules from the people. You can reject a belief and still love the person who holds it.
- Choose your own rituals and keep them. The Hierophant needs traditions, even new ones.
- If contact is not possible, make peace on paper: write the letter, settle it inside.
Minus and plus of the rebel tail
In the minus, the rebel is defined entirely by opposition: restless, rootless, at war with family and authority, and secretly lonely for a place to belong. In the plus, the same person is an independent thinker with deep values of their own, able to keep the best of where they came from and pass on something better.
The other tail where Judgement shapes the family story is the 6-8-20 karmic tail, where reconciling with relatives is the task rather than the backstory.
