Destiny Matrix numbers and their meanings

Updated October 17, 2026 · How we write these pages

The short answer

Each Destiny Matrix number from 1 to 22 is an energy named after a major arcana card: 1 the Magician, 6 the Lovers, 13 Death, 22 the Fool. Every number is read two ways, in plus when it works for you and in minus when it gets stuck, and its position says which part of life it colors.

How the arcana of the destiny matrix work

The matrix has no zero and nothing above 22. Every sum on the chart is reduced into that range, which matches the 22 cards of the tarot's major arcana exactly. Each card lends its number a character: the Hermit's lamp, the Tower's lightning, the Sun's warmth. That is why the numbers are often called arcana rather than numbers, and why a matrix reads like a spread of tarot cards placed by your birth date instead of by shuffling.

An energy does not change from place to place, but what it describes does. A 15 at your portrait is charisma people notice in the first minute. A 15 on your money line is a talent for earning and spending. A 15 in your karmic tail is a pattern around desire or control you came to work through.

Every destiny matrix arcana in plus and minus

The plus is the energy lived well, the minus the same energy stuck. Most people recognize both in themselves, which is the point: the minus shows the habit, the plus shows where it can go.

The essence of each number in one line

If the table is too much at once, this is what each energy is about wherever it sits on your arcana matrix chart.

  • 1: starting, an idea, a voice and the hands to make it real.
  • 2: the inner voice, knowing before you can explain why.
  • 3: making life grow, comfort, beauty, children and projects.
  • 4: order, building something solid and taking charge of it.
  • 5: the teacher, passing on what is true and worth keeping.
  • 6: the heart's choice, love and choosing with your whole self.
  • 7: momentum, a goal, a direction and the will to get there.
  • 8: balance, cause and effect, and owning both.
  • 9: depth, going inward and coming back with an answer.
  • 10: flow, timing, luck and trusting the turn of the wheel.
  • 11: raw strength, body, will and the courage to use them.
  • 12: the different view, pausing and letting go.
  • 13: change, ending what is finished so the new can start.
  • 14: the right measure, blending, healing and calm.
  • 15: desire, magnetism, money and the pull of temptation.
  • 16: the breakthrough, what is false falls so the true can be built.
  • 17: the gift, talent, beauty and being seen for it.
  • 18: the deep, dreams, imagination and fears in the dark.
  • 19: light, warmth, success and joy that spreads.

Why 8 is Justice and 11 is Strength

If you know the Rider-Waite tarot, two numbers will look swapped. The Rider-Waite deck of 1909 swapped them, following the astrological order of the Golden Dawn, the society its author Arthur Edward Waite belonged to. The older Marseille decks, which the matrix follows, keep Justice at 8 and Strength at 11. So in the matrix, an 8 is about fairness, truth and consequences, and an 11 is about stamina, courage and the body's power. Ignore the card number printed on a Rider-Waite card when you read your chart.

Why the Fool is 22 and there is no zero

Most decks number the Fool 0. The matrix has no zero, since every value is reached by adding positive numbers, so the Fool takes the last place, 22. Read this way the Fool is not an absence but a full circle: the freedom that comes after the World has been completed. Some calculators still reduce 22 to 4 or write a 0; this site keeps 22, as most matrix calculators do.

Common and rare numbers

Not every number appears equally often. The four corners spread fairly evenly, but sums toward the center cluster. Counting every birth date from 1940 to 2012, a center of 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11 each turns up for about 1 in 9 people. A center of 14 is about 1 in 234, 16 about 1 in 567, 18 about 1 in 321, 20 about 1 in 217 and 22 about 1 in 154. Over those years, 1, 2, 15, 17, 19 and 21 never land in the center at all. A rare number is not a better one; it simply describes a less common way of living.

How to move an energy into its plus

The tradition's advice is consistent: you do not escape a number, you live it more fully. A minus state is usually the energy held back or overused. The practical move is to give it a healthy outlet, deliberately and often.

  • Read your number's minus line and write down where it showed up this month.
  • Read the plus line and pick one small action that looks like it, such as speaking first for a 1 or finishing one task for a 21.
  • Repeat the action for a few weeks before judging the result.
  • Use the card itself as a reminder: many people keep the image of their center or portrait card somewhere they see daily.

Questions people ask

Each number from 1 to 22 is an energy tied to the major arcana card with that number in the Marseille order. Its position on the chart says which area of life it describes, and how you live it decides whether it shows in its plus or its minus.

No. The matrix has no master numbers. 22 is simply the Fool, the last of the 22 energies, and it is never reduced to 4 on this site.

No. Death (13), the Devil (15) and the Tower (16) sound alarming, but each has a constructive plus: renewal, magnetism and the courage to rebuild. Every energy, including the gentle ones, also has a minus.

The matrix numbers the cards in the Marseille order, so 8 is Justice and 11 is Strength, and the Fool is 22 instead of 0. If you read with a Rider-Waite deck, swap 8 and 11 when you look up a card.
