Strength tarot card meaning: gentle courage and inner power

Updated October 17, 2026 · How we write these pages

The short answer

The Strength tarot card means courage, compassion and patient inner power. Upright, it says you can handle this, not by force but by calm, steady confidence, the way the woman on the card closes the lion's jaws. Reversed, it points to self-doubt or raw emotion running the show. As a yes or no answer, Strength is a yes.

What does the Strength tarot card mean?

A woman in a white robe gently closes the mouth of a lion. She is not wrestling it. Her hands are soft, her face is calm, and the lion seems almost to lean into her. That image is the whole card: strength that comes from patience, kindness and self-possession, not from muscle. It is the strength it takes to stay calm in an argument, to be gentle with a frightened child, or to sit with a craving and not act on it.

Upright, the card says you have more courage than you think, and the right kind. The lion is your own wild side, fear, anger, desire, and you do not need to kill it. You need to befriend it. Strength often appears when someone is facing a long, hard stretch and needs endurance more than heroics.

Symbols on the Strength card

The force on this card is all in her calm. There is no struggle on her face, and the lion's tail is curled between its legs like a contented cat's.

  • The lion: passion, instinct, anger and raw appetite, the animal self.
  • Her hands on its jaws: mastery through gentleness rather than force.
  • The infinity sign over her head: the same symbol as The Magician's, now turned to inner power.
  • The chain of flowers around her waist and the lion's neck: a bond of love, not of iron.
  • Her white robe: purity of intention.
  • The blue mountain in the distance: the long road, and calm after struggle.

Strength upright

Upright, Strength asks you to be firm and kind at once. If you are dealing with a difficult person, it says patience will do more than confrontation. If you are dealing with your own anxiety, habits or temper, it says compassion toward yourself works better than shame. It is a card of recovery, sobriety, healing and resilience, and of the long, ordinary bravery that nobody applauds.

Strength reversed

Reversed, Strength is less often cowardice than self-doubt: courage you have but are not using. You may feel drained, insecure, or too fragile for what is in front of you. Sometimes the reversed card describes the lion getting loose: anger, jealousy, cravings or panic taking over because you are exhausted and your patience has run out.

The remedy is to restore the woman before you tackle the lion. Rest, eat, sleep, ask for help. Then go back to the hard thing with the calm you had before you were worn down.

Strength tarot love meaning

In love, Strength is patience, warmth and the courage to be vulnerable. It is a very good sign for a relationship going through a hard patch.

StageUprightReversed
SingleConfidence that draws people in; be brave and make the approachLow self-worth keeping you from trying
DatingA connection with real warmth and chemistryJealousy, insecurity, or passion running ahead of trust
In a relationshipA bond that survives challenges through patience and tendernessTempers flaring, or one partner carrying all the emotional weight
With an exThe strength to forgive and move on with graceStruggling with anger or longing you cannot shake

Strength as feelings

As feelings, Strength means the person feels a deep, steady attraction and a protective tenderness toward you. They may see you as strong, or feel stronger themselves around you. There is often real passion underneath their calm. Reversed, they may be insecure about the relationship, fear rejection, or be struggling with feelings they cannot control.

Strength at work and with money

At work, Strength favors roles that need emotional intelligence: nursing, teaching, therapy, care work, coaching, managing people, working with animals. It says you will win through persistence and composure, especially with a difficult boss or client. With money, steady discipline beats drastic moves. Reversed, burnout or a lack of confidence may be holding you back; ask for the raise you have been too nervous to ask for.

Strength as advice

As advice, Strength says lead with softness. Next time you feel the urge to snap, push or give up, pause for one breath and choose the gentle response. Talk to yourself the way you would talk to someone you love. Small acts of self-command, repeated, are what the card calls strength.

Strength yes or no

Strength is a yes, especially for questions about whether you can handle something, recover from something or keep going. It is a patient yes: you will get there, though perhaps not quickly. Reversed it softens to maybe, a yes once you rebuild your confidence or calm down.

Strength with a difficult person

When Strength describes how to handle someone else, a sharp boss, a grieving parent, a partner who flares up, its advice is specific. Do not match their volume. Lower your voice, slow your speech and say less. Name what you see without accusing ("you seem really frustrated"), then hold the one boundary that matters and let the rest go. The woman on the card does not argue with the lion. She stays calm long enough for it to calm down too.

This only works from a full tank. If you are exhausted, the card's reversed meaning applies first, and the brave move is to step away and come back rested rather than to keep absorbing the roar.

Strength in past, present and future

In a health or recovery question, readers take Strength as encouragement to keep going, alongside proper care.

  • Past: you came through something hard with patience, and that resilience is still yours.
  • Present: the situation calls for calm courage, not force.
  • Future: you will find the inner strength the coming challenge needs.

Why Strength is card 8 in some decks and 11 in others

In the old Marseille deck Strength is card 11 and Justice card 8. The Golden Dawn swapped them so that the major arcana's sequence of Hebrew letters lined up with the zodiac: Strength took Teth and Leo, Justice took Lamed and Libra, and Leo comes before Libra. Waite's 1909 deck printed the new order, so Rider-Waite-Smith Strength is 8. Both orders are still in use, and the card means the same thing either way.

Strength's astrology, element and number

Strength belongs to Leo, the lion, ruled by the Sun, which is why a lion is on the card. Leo is fixed fire: generous, warm, proud and steady, with a heart that likes to protect. The card shows Leo's best side, courage that comes from warmth. Thoth decks call the card Lust, reading the same lion as raw, joyful vitality.

In Waite's numbering it is 8, the number of mastery and effort in the minor arcana, as in the Eight of Pentacles. In Marseille numbering it is 11, which reduces to 2, the number of balance.

Strength in a reading

Several fire cards beside it raise the courage; several water cards point to emotional strength.

  • Strength and The Chariot: will and compassion, the two halves of power, working together.
  • Strength and the Nine of Wands: endurance, one last push through exhaustion.
  • Strength and the Queen of Wands: confident, warm leadership.
  • Strength reversed and The Devil: a habit or craving that has got the upper hand.
  • Strength and Temperance: recovery through patience and moderation.

Strength in the Destiny Matrix

In the Destiny Matrix, a chart built from your birth date, Strength is arcana 11. The matrix numbers it 11, not 8, as the Marseille deck does. The energy of raw strength: body, will and the courage to use them. Lived in the plus, you have stamina and courage, and you lift what others cannot. In the minus: overwork, anger held in the body, forcing instead of flowing.

Where Strength sits in a matrix decides what it rules there: your calling card, your center, your talents, your karmic tail or your love and money line. The free destiny matrix calculator shows whether it is in yours, and where.
