What does The Chariot tarot card mean?
The Chariot is card 7 and the end of the first act of the major arcana: the young Fool, having learned from parents, teachers and love, now rides out into the world as a hero. A crowned figure in armor stands in a chariot drawn by two sphinxes, one black and one white. The city is behind him. He has left home and is going somewhere on purpose.
Upright, the card says victory is possible, and it will come from focus and self-command rather than luck. The two sphinxes pull in different directions, and the charioteer holds them on one course by will alone. That is the card's whole lesson: success is the ability to keep contradictory feelings, people or demands moving the same way. It is a card of ambition, competition, travel and getting results.
| Area | Upright | Reversed |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords | Determination, willpower, victory, momentum | Lack of direction, aggression, obstacles, loss of control |
| Love | Going after what you want; a relationship moving forward | Power struggles, or a partner pulling the other way |
| Work | A win, a promotion, a project on schedule | Stalled progress, burnout, scattered effort |
| Yes or no | Yes | Maybe |
Symbols on The Chariot card: the sphinxes and the missing reins
The chariot is not moving in the picture. The victory is in the stillness of a mind that knows where it is going.
- Two sphinxes, black and white: opposing forces, instincts or people that must be steered together.
- No reins in his hands: control by will and focus, not by force.
- The starry canopy: guidance from above, and the heavens he is aligned with.
- The crescent moons on his shoulders: Cancer and the Moon, feeling kept under armor.
- The square on his chest and the city behind: the stable base he leaves to venture out.
- The winged disk on the chariot front: inspiration and the power to rise.

Read my goalThe Chariot upright
Upright, The Chariot is momentum you create. It shows up before exams, competitions, job hunts, moves, training plans and any challenge that rewards discipline. It asks for a clear goal, a plan, and the willingness to keep going when part of you wants to stop. It also asks you to manage your emotions rather than be driven by them: the armor is there because feelings, like the sphinxes, run off in their own directions if you let go.
The Chariot reversed
Reversed, the sphinxes have won. You may feel pulled in two directions, unable to commit to one goal, or stuck because the opposing forces have canceled each other out. Plans stall, motivation disappears, and effort goes in circles. The reversed card can also describe the opposite problem: too much force, aggression, steamrolling other people, or a win that costs more than it is worth.
Either way the cure is to get off the chariot for a moment and decide where you are actually going. One goal, written down. Then get back on.
The Chariot tarot love meaning
In love The Chariot is active: someone decides what they want and goes after it. It favors pursuit, progress and overcoming obstacles together.
| Stage | Upright | Reversed |
|---|---|---|
| Single | Take the initiative; a confident person may pursue you | Chasing someone who is not interested, or too focused on work for love |
| Dating | Fast progress, clear intentions, momentum | Pushing too hard, or one person stalling |
| In a relationship | Overcoming a challenge together, a move, a shared goal | Power struggles, a battle of wills |
| With an ex | Moving on with determination, or a deliberate effort to win them back | Being pulled back and forth between staying and leaving |
The Chariot as feelings
As feelings, The Chariot means the person is determined about you. They want you and are willing to make an effort, often visibly. They may also be guarded, armored like the charioteer, showing drive rather than tenderness. Reversed, they may feel conflicted, pulled between you and something else, or frustrated that things are not moving.
Career and money
At work The Chariot is one of the best cards for ambition: a promotion, a win, a launch, a competition or a target hit through hard work. It favors sales, sports, the military, logistics, entrepreneurship and any role where drive is rewarded. With money it says you can reach a goal if you stick to the plan. Reversed, you may be overcommitted, competing on too many fronts, or spending energy and money without direction.
The Chariot as actions
As actions, The Chariot says set the goal, set the date and start moving. Choose one thing to win this month and drop or delay the rest. When doubt or emotion pulls you off course, notice it, acknowledge it and steer back. The card is not about crushing your feelings; it is about not letting them drive.
Is The Chariot a yes or no card?
The Chariot is a yes, especially for questions about winning, moving, traveling, competing and achieving a goal. It is a yes that depends on effort: it will happen if you drive it. Reversed it softens to maybe, because the direction is unclear or the forces are not yet working together.
The Chariot and travel
Because it shows a vehicle leaving a city, The Chariot is the card readers most associate with travel by road, a move or a journey with a purpose. Unlike the Eight of Wands, which is speed, or the Six of Swords, which is moving away from trouble, The Chariot is travel toward a goal: the job in a new city, the road trip, the race. If you asked about a move, it is encouraging.
The Chariot in past, present and future
Reversed in the present, it is the sign to stop and choose before you push harder.
- Past: a win, or a period of hard focus, got you to where you are.
- Present: it is time to commit to one direction and drive.
- Future: success is coming, as long as you keep control of the reins you do not have.
The Chariot's astrology, element and number
The Golden Dawn gave The Chariot the sign of Cancer and the Hebrew letter Cheth, a fence or enclosure. That surprises people: why would the most driven card belong to the sensitive crab? The answer is the armor. Cancer protects a soft interior with a hard shell, and the charioteer's victory comes from mastering his feelings, not from having none. Cancer is also cardinal water, a sign that starts things.
Its number, 7, is the number of tests and strategy. Sevens in the minor arcana, such as the Seven of Wands defending the hill, all ask whether you can hold your ground.
The Chariot with other cards
The Chariot versus Strength: The Chariot wins by steering opposing forces, Strength by taming them with compassion.
- The Chariot and the Six of Wands: victory and public recognition.
- The Chariot and the Eight of Wands: fast progress, quick travel.
- The Chariot and Strength: will and gentleness together, the most complete kind of power.
- The Chariot reversed and the Two of Swords: stuck between two options, going nowhere.
- The Chariot and the World: a goal reached, often a journey completed.
The Chariot in the Destiny Matrix
In the Destiny Matrix, a chart built from your birth date, The Chariot is arcana 7. The energy of momentum: a goal, a direction and the will to get there. Lived in the plus, you move, win and carry others forward with you. In the minus: restlessness, pushing too hard, running from stillness.
Where The Chariot sits in a matrix decides what it rules there: your calling card, your center, your talents, your karmic tail or your love and money line. The free destiny matrix calculator shows whether it is in yours, and where.
