Yes or no tarot: ask a question, pick a card

Yes or no tarot
Ask, shuffle, pick one card
Hold a yes or no question in mind. The deck is all 78 cards, shuffled fairly, each upright or reversed.
The short answer
Yes or no tarot answers a closed question with one card. Bright, forward-moving cards such as The Sun or the Ace of Cups mean yes, cards of loss or conflict such as The Tower or the Three of Swords mean no, and mixed cards mean maybe. A reversed card usually softens or delays the answer.
How this free yes or no tarot reading works
The reading above uses the whole 78-card deck. When you tap shuffle, the deck is shuffled fairly with your browser's cryptographic random generator, each card is turned upright or reversed at even odds, and five cards are fanned out face down. You pick one. Its answer comes from the table on this page, and the reason line quotes the card's own keywords, so you can always see why it said what it said, and follow the link to that card's full meaning.
Your question stays on your screen and is never sent anywhere. Typing it is optional, but writing it out tends to make it sharper, and a sharp question gets a clearer card. There is no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.
How the answer is decided: yes, no or maybe
Every card has one upright answer, chosen by its traditional tone. A card is a yes when its scene is moving forward, opening up or arriving: success, love returned, a door held open. It is a no when the scene is about loss, conflict, being stuck or a door closing. It is a maybe when the card is about waiting, weighing, hidden information or a test whose result depends on you. Most of the deck is yes, because most of the deck describes growth, and the swords suit carries most of the no cards.
That is the whole system, and it is published here so the tool is predictable rather than arbitrary. Many yes or no sites never say how a card becomes an answer. If you disagree with a card's place, the card's own page explains why we put it there.

Ask with five cardsWhat a reversed card means for yes or no
Reversed cards follow one rule with three exceptions. A reversed yes card softens to maybe: the door is open, but not yet, or not in the way you pictured. A reversed maybe card tips to no, because a situation that is unclear and also blocked is not ready. A reversed no card lifts to maybe, since the difficulty it describes is already easing.
So The Sun reversed is a maybe, Justice reversed is a no, and The Tower reversed is a maybe: the upheaval may be avoidable, or already behind you. The exceptions are three Cups cards whose reversal reads as waking up. The Four of Cups reversed finally sees the offer, and the Seven of Cups reversed clears the fog and chooses, so both turn to yes. The Eight of Cups is a maybe both ways up, because it says yes to leaving and no to staying, and only your question tells it which.
How to ask a tarot yes or no question
The single biggest improvement to a yes or no reading is the question. Tarot describes forces and tendencies, so questions about your own choices work better than questions about luck or about what another person secretly wants.
- Ask one thing at a time. "Should I take the job and move?" is two questions.
- Put yourself in it. "Is it wise for me to apply now?" beats "Will they hire me?"
- Keep it in the near term. Weeks and months read more clearly than years.
- Avoid questions only another person can answer. "Should I reach out to him?" works; "Does he secretly love me?" does not.
- Ask once. Drawing again until you like the answer teaches you nothing.
- If you keep getting maybe, the question is probably not a yes or no one.

| Will the move work out? | Is moving in the spring the right call for me? |
Major arcana yes or no answers
The major arcana give the strongest answers, since they describe big forces rather than small events. Most are clear yes cards. Death, The Devil and The Tower are no, and the quiet, inward cards, The High Priestess, The Hermit, Justice, The Hanged Man and The Moon, sit on maybe.

Water cards answer about love and feeling, and most of them say yes. The Four, Five and Seven are the no cards and the Eight is a maybe. The Four, Seven and Eight are the three cards whose reversals break the usual rule.

Earth cards answer about money, work and the slow build, and they are the steadiest yes cards in the deck. Only the Five, hardship, is a no; the Two, Four and Seven ask you to wait or juggle.

Is yes or no tarot accurate?
No study has shown that tarot cards know the answer to a question, and we do not claim they do. What a one-card reading does reliably is make you notice your reaction. If the card says no and you feel relief, that tells you something. If it says yes and your stomach drops, that tells you more. Treat the card as a prompt for that check, not as a verdict on your life.
When yes or no is not enough
A single card is quick and often surprisingly apt, but it cannot tell you why, what stands in the way or what to do about it. If the answer matters, ask the same question with more cards. A three-card spread of situation, obstacle and advice turns a bare maybe into something you can act on, and our love tarot reading has two spreads made for questions about another person.

Ask with five cardsQuestions people ask
Is this yes or no tarot reading free?
Yes. The one-card yes or no reading on this page is free, needs no sign-up and works as many times as you like. Only the full five-card reading, written for your question with your birth chart, is part of the membership.
Which tarot cards mean yes?
The Sun is the classic strongest yes, with The Star, The World, the Ace of Cups, the Nine of Cups and the Ten of Pentacles close behind. Upright, 46 of the 78 cards in our table are a yes, because most of the deck describes growth or arrival.
Which tarot cards mean no?
Upright, the clearest no cards are The Tower, Death and The Devil among the majors, and in the minors the Three, Nine and Ten of Swords and the Five of Pentacles. Each describes loss, conflict or a door that is closing.
Can I ask the same yes or no question twice?
You can, but readers advise against it. If the first card felt wrong, ask what you need to understand about the situation instead. A second draw for the same question mostly measures how much you wanted a different answer.
What does a maybe card mean in yes or no tarot?
A maybe means the outcome is not fixed yet, usually because it depends on a choice, on timing or on something you do not know. Ask what the missing piece is, or lay three cards on the same question to see it.
