Tarot birth card calculator: your personality and soul card, one card or a pair
By Nick Krüger · Updated October 31, 2026 · How we write these pages
The short answer
Your tarot birth card is the major arcana card your date of birth adds up to. Add the month, day and year, then add the digits of the total until you reach 22 or less. A total of 19 gives three cards, any other total from 10 to 22 a pair, and a single digit one card for both roles.

How to find your tarot birth card
The method most readers use comes from the American tarot teacher Mary K. Greer, who set it out in her 1984 book Tarot for Yourself. It needs nothing but your date of birth and some addition, and the calculator above shows each step so you can check it by hand.
- Add your birth month, day and year as numbers. Someone born on July 19, 1985 adds 7 + 19 + 1985 = 2011.
- Add the digits of that total: 2 + 0 + 1 + 1 = 4.
- If the result is more than 22, add its digits again until it is 22 or less.
- If the result is 10 to 21, it is your first card, and the sum of its two digits is your second.
- A result of 22 is The Fool, card 0, paired with The Emperor, because 2 + 2 = 4.
- A single digit, as in the example above, is one card that serves as both your personality and your soul card. More than half of all birth dates land here.
Personality card and soul card
When you have two cards, Greer gives them different jobs. The higher number is the personality card: how you tend to meet the world, the way other people experience you, and the lessons that come through ordinary life. The single-digit card is the soul card: the deeper purpose underneath, what you are here to learn and give over a lifetime. Someone with Death and The Emperor, 13 and 4, may move through life by ending and rebuilding things, while learning, underneath, how to build structures worth keeping.
If your total was a single digit, the one card carries both roles, and that is the most common result: more than half of all birth dates reduce to a number from 1 to 9. It is not a weaker result. It suggests your outer life and your inner purpose pull in the same direction, for better and for worse.
A birth card is one way to turn a birth date into major arcana. The Destiny Matrix takes the idea much further: the same date gives 32 arcana, each placed on an eight-pointed chart that reads your talents, your karmic tail and your love and money lines.

Because every birth card reduces to a digit from 1 to 9, the 22 majors fall into nine families, which Greer calls constellations. Everyone with a 4 soul card shares a theme, whether their personality card is The Emperor, Death or The Fool.
| Soul card | Possible personality cards | Shared theme |
|---|---|---|
| 1 The Magician | 10 Wheel of Fortune, 19 The Sun | Will, creativity, making things happen |
| 2 The High Priestess | 11 Justice, 20 Judgement | Inner knowing, balance, a truthful life |
| 3 The Empress | 12 The Hanged Man, 21 The World | Creation, care and letting go to grow |
| 4 The Emperor | 13 Death, 22 as The Fool | Building, ending and building again |
| 5 The Hierophant | 14 Temperance | Teaching, belief, finding the middle way |
| 6 The Lovers | 15 The Devil | Love, choice, attachment and freedom |
| 7 The Chariot | 16 The Tower | Drive, will, and what breaks it open |
| 8 Strength | 17 The Star | Courage, gentleness, hope |
| 9 The Hermit | 18 The Moon | Solitude, intuition, walking in the dark |
The three-card set: 19, 10 and 1
One total runs further than the others. A sum of 19 is The Sun, its digits give 10, the Wheel of Fortune, and those digits give 1, The Magician, so people with a 19 have three birth cards. Readers take this as a strong, bright set: confidence and visibility from The Sun, a life of turning points from the Wheel, and a soul card about will and creation. At the other end, for people born between about 1940 and 2010, Death, Temperance, The Devil and The Tower are the rarest personality cards, because totals that reduce to 13 to 16 are uncommon for those years.
Why the minor arcana have no birth cards
The method only reaches the major arcana because every total is reduced to 22 or less, one number for each major. That suits the idea behind it: a birth card is meant to describe a life theme, and life themes are the majors' job. If you want a minor card that speaks to you, many readers use the court card of their sun sign's element, such as the Queen of Cups for a water sign, as a personal significator.
Your tarot year card
Greer adds a second calculation that changes every year. Use the same steps with this year in place of your birth year: add your birth month, your birth day and the current year, then reduce. Someone born on July 19 adds 7 + 19 + 2026 = 2052, and 2 + 0 + 5 + 2 = 9, so their year card for 2026 is The Hermit, a year for stepping back and listening. The year card runs from one birthday to the next, and it is a good card to lay beside a New Year or birthday reading.
Birth cards and your zodiac card
There is a second way to find a major arcana card from your birthday: the card of your sun sign. The Golden Dawn gave each zodiac sign a major, so an Aries is linked to The Emperor and a Pisces to The Moon. Your zodiac card and your birth cards often differ, and that is fine. The zodiac card describes your sign's temperament, and the birth cards describe your own date. Our major arcana guide lists the card for every sign.
| Sun sign | Zodiac card | Sun sign | Zodiac card |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | The Emperor | Libra | Justice |
| Taurus | The Hierophant | Scorpio | Death |
| Gemini | The Lovers | Sagittarius | Temperance |
| Cancer | The Chariot | Capricorn | The Devil |
| Leo | Strength | Aquarius | The Star |
| Virgo | The Hermit | Pisces | The Moon |
Birth cards in relationships
Some readers compare two people's birth cards the way astrologers compare charts. Two people who share a soul card, say both 7, The Chariot, often recognize the same drive in each other. Cards that sit next to each other in the deck, such as The Empress and The Emperor, can describe partners who complete each other. Cards from very different constellations simply mean you learn different lessons, which can be the point of the relationship.
Treat this as a conversation starter rather than a compatibility score. Reading your partner's two card pages together, and talking about which parts each of you recognizes, says more than any rule about which numbers match.
How to use your birth cards
Birth cards are a lens, not a label. Read your card's page, or both pages if you have a pair, and notice which parts you recognize and which you resist; the resisted parts are often the lessons. Some readers pull their birth cards out of the deck and keep them on a desk or altar, and some lay them as the first cards of a big reading to represent the person asking. It is also a good way to meet the major arcana: one or two cards that feel personal are easier to learn than twenty-two that do not.
