People with this tail tend to know things. Sometimes it is book knowledge, years of reading on a subject nobody asked about. Sometimes it is intuition, a reliable sense of how situations will turn out. Sometimes it is a craft practiced quietly at home. What they share is a reluctance to bring it out. It feels private, or not quite ready, or likely to be misunderstood.

The tradition imagines a past as a scholar, monk or keeper of secret teachings who lived apart and took what they knew with them. As the tradition's picture it suits the modern pattern: a rich inner world, a preference for solitude, and a sense that your real self is mostly invisible to others.

What the Moon and the two Hermits mean

The inner point is Arcana 18, the Moon: dreams, imagination and the unconscious. It is the door to this tail, a mind that works in images and hunches, and in the minus, fears that grow in isolation.

The middle and bottom points are both Arcana 9, the Hermit. In the middle, it is the story of withdrawal, knowledge gathered alone and kept there. At the bottom, as the karmic task, it is the Hermit in its full meaning: the wise one who goes inward and then comes back with a lamp for others. The task is the coming back.

Love, work and family for the hermit mage

In relationships, people with 18-9-9 are often loyal, thoughtful and private. Partners may feel they know only part of you. Sharing your inner world, your ideas, your odd interests, your dreams, is an act of intimacy for this tail, and it tends to deepen love far more than you expect.

At work, this tail is suited to research, writing, analysis, therapy, teaching and anything that rewards depth. The trap is staying in the background, doing the thinking while others take the credit, or never publishing, presenting or charging for what you know.
