Arcana 9, the Hermit, in your Destiny Matrix

A lamp in the dark: the 9 arcana

The Hermit tarot card shows an old man on a mountain path at night, holding up a lantern with a star inside it. He is alone, but not lost. He went up there on purpose, to see further, and the light he carries is for whoever comes up the path behind him. That is the 9 in Ladini's matrix: wisdom, solitude and depth, a mind that needs quiet to think and then has something real to say.

People with a strong Hermit tend to be thoughtful, private and selective about company. They read, research, walk and ask why. They are often the person friends call when they need an honest answer rather than a comforting one. Their difficulty is the door they close behind them: the solitude that was meant to be a retreat becomes a place they forget to leave.

Is the Hermit common in charts?

Very. We ran the matrix for every birth date from 1940 to 2012 and found a 9 at the center of 2,881 of 26,664 charts, 10.8 percent, about 1 in 9. A 9 is also the entry to relationships (the point where the bottom ray meets the love line) for 12.4 percent of people, and the spiritual purpose for 23.2 percent, the most common value there by far. That last number fits the energy: the Hermit is about meaning.

Six tails contain it, and about 1 in 5 people carry one of them: the 9-3-21 karmic tail, the 9-9-18 karmic tail, the 9-12-3 karmic tail, the 9-15-6 karmic tail, the 9-18-9 karmic tail and the 18-9-9 karmic tail. Several of them deal with knowledge or gifts that were hidden away, which the tradition asks this life to open up again.

The 9 arcana destiny matrix reading for each point

Here is how the Hermit shifts with its place on the star.

• ✦Calling card (born on the 9th or the 27th): calm, reserved, observant; people find you wise or a little distant before they know you.
• ✦Higher self (a September birth): a talent for research, philosophy, analysis and teaching what you have worked out alone.
• ✦Material karma (born in 1989, 1998 or 2007): money through expertise, depth and independent work; slow, steady accumulation rather than quick deals.
• ✦Karmic task: to come out of isolation and share what you know, and to accept that you can be understood.
• ✦Center: you recharge alone, in nature, with books or in silence; in minus, withdrawal becomes the default.
• ✦Love point: an older or wiser partner, or one who needs space; love that respects each person's solitude.
• ✦Money point: earning from knowledge, consulting, writing or specialist work that few others can do.
• ✦Purpose: to find wisdom and pass it on; the spiritual purpose is the Hermit's natural home.
• ✦Family lines: a lineage of thinkers, loners or kept secrets; the gift is depth, the burden is silence.
• ✦Year on the age ring: a year for study, retreat, reflection and a clearer sense of what you are for.

Depth in plus, isolation in minus

Solitude chosen restores you. Solitude as a hiding place empties you.

Carrying the lamp back down

For a Hermit the movement that matters is the return. Take your time alone, and then share what you found: write it, teach it, say it to one person. Keep one or two relationships where you can be fully understood, and practice explaining yourself instead of assuming nobody will get it. Set a limit on solitude the same way others set a limit on screen time.

Example: a 9 on the left point

Someone born on 9 July 1972 has a calling card of 9, a higher self of 7 from July, material karma of 19 and a karmic task of 8. The center is 7 and the tail is the 15-5-8 karmic tail. The quiet face over an energetic Chariot core is a familiar combination: reserved in a room, fast once a goal appears. You can check any date on the destiny matrix chart, and read the neighbors, arcana 8 and arcana 10.
