The 64 Human Design gates and the 36 channels
By Nick Krüger · Updated October 19, 2026 · How we write these pages
The short answer
Human Design has 64 gates, one for each hexagram of the I Ching. Each gate sits in one of the nine centers and pairs with another gate to form one of 36 channels. A gate is active in your chart when a planet stood in it at your birth or at your design, about three months before.

What a gate is
A gate is a single theme of human experience: alertness, ambition, caution, doubt and sixty more. Ra Uru Hu took the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, kept their numbers, and placed each one as a gate on the edge of a center in the bodygraph. Around the zodiac, the same 64 gates form a wheel, each 5.625 degrees wide, starting with gate 41 at 2 degrees of Aquarius. When a planet sits in that slice of the sky at your birth or design moment, the gate is activated in your chart.
Because the 26 activations often double up, a chart usually shows about 17 to 22 different gates, never more than 26. Each activation also has a line from 1 to 6, so a full reference looks like 34.2, gate 34 in its second line. The line adds a shade to the gate's theme, and the line of your Sun gate is half of your human design profile.
Defined, hanging and open gates
A gate is half of a channel. When both gates of a channel are active, from any mix of personality and design planets, the channel is defined and so are the two centers at its ends. That is how centers become defined, and through them how your type is set.
A gate active without its partner is a hanging gate. It is still a constant theme in your life, but it reaches outward: you are drawn to people who carry the other gate, and you feel the channel come alive when you are with them. A gate that is not active at all is open, and you experience its theme through other people and through transits, the planets moving through it today.
- Black gate (gold in our chart): activated at birth (personality), a theme you are aware of in yourself.
- Red gate (rose in our chart): activated at the design moment, a theme others see in you before you do.
- Black and red together, striped in our chart: the same gate activated at both moments, doubly emphasized.

Get today's readingHead center gates
The Head is a pressure center at the top of the bodygraph. Its three gates are mental pressures, questions that press for an answer, and each one feeds down into a gate of the Ajna.
| Gate | Name | What it carries |
|---|---|---|
| 61 | Mystery | Pressure to know the unknowable and find an inner truth. |
| 63 | Doubt | Doubt that tests a pattern, the logical question about the future. |
| 64 | Confusion | Confusion about the past, the mental pressure to make sense of it. |
Ajna center gates
The Ajna is the awareness center of the mind. Its six gates are ways of thinking: abstract, logical and individual. Three connect up to the Head and three down to the Throat.
| Gate | Name | What it carries |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | Formulization | Answers and formulas, the mind that solves a doubt with a working logic. |
| 11 | Ideas | A stream of ideas and images, held to be shared rather than acted on. |
| 17 | Opinions | Logical opinions about how things should be organized going forward. |
| 24 | Rationalization | The mind that returns to a thought again and again until it makes sense. |
| 43 | Insight | Breakthrough insight, a sudden knowing that is hard to explain. |
| 47 | Realizing | Making sense of the past until a confused memory clicks into place. |
Throat center gates
The Throat has more gates than any other center, eleven, because everything in the bodygraph moves toward expression. Each gate is a different voice: some say I think, some I feel, some I do. A motor reaching the Throat through a defined channel is what makes a Manifestor or a Manifesting Generator.
| Gate | Name | What it carries |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | Contribution | Making a distinct contribution and showing others what is possible. |
| 12 | Caution | Caution in speech: the right words, said with the right mood and timing. |
| 16 | Skills | Enthusiasm for a craft and the repetition that turns talent into skill. |
| 20 | The Now | Presence in the now, the voice of what is happening right this moment. |
| 23 | Assimilation | Turning a strange insight into simple words that other people understand. |
| 31 | Influence | Influence that is given by others, the leader who is voted in. |
| 33 | Privacy | Withdrawal to reflect, then remembering and telling the story. |
| 35 | Change | Hunger for change and new experience, the been there, done that energy. |
| 45 | The Gatherer | The gatherer who leads by holding the resources and sharing them. |
| 56 | Stimulation | Stimulation through stories, the teller who makes ideas come alive. |
| 62 | Detail | Detail and fact, naming things precisely so others can follow. |
G center gates
The G center holds identity, love and direction. Its eight gates are traditionally read as four gates of love (10, 15, 25 and 46) and four of direction and role (1, 2, 7 and 13).
| Gate | Name | What it carries |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Self-Expression | The drive to express something original, in its own time and its own way. |
| 2 | Direction of the Self | A quiet inner sense of where life is heading, the keeper of direction. |
| 7 | The Role of the Self | Leadership that guides by knowing which way the group should go next. |
| 10 | Behavior of the Self | Loving yourself enough to behave as you are, whatever others think. |
| 13 | The Listener | The listener who collects other people's stories and secrets. |
| 15 | Extremes | A love of humanity and of every rhythm, from the extreme to the ordinary. |
| 25 | The Spirit of the Self | Innocence and universal love, the spirit of the self. |
| 46 | Determination of the Self | Love of the body and of being in the right place by good fortune. |
Heart center gates
The Heart, also called the Ego center, is the smallest motor, with four gates. It is about willpower, worth, ownership and promises, and it works in bursts with rest in between.
| Gate | Name | What it carries |
|---|---|---|
| 21 | The Hunter | Control over territory and resources, the manager of what is owned. |
| 26 | The Egoist | The persuader and seller, using will and memory to get a point across. |
| 40 | Aloneness | Aloneness after work: the need to rest once you have delivered. |
| 51 | Shock | Shock and initiation, the competitive jolt that wakes people up. |
Spleen center gates
The Spleen is the oldest awareness center: instinct, intuition, health and the body's fears. Each of its seven gates carries a fear that is healthy in small measure and paralyzing in large.
| Gate | Name | What it carries |
|---|---|---|
| 18 | Correction | The urge to spot what is wrong with a pattern and correct it. |
| 28 | The Game Player | Searching for what makes life worth the struggle, the risk taker. |
| 32 | Continuity | Instinct for what will last and a fear of failing to keep it going. |
| 44 | Alertness | Alertness to patterns from the past, the instinct for people. |
| 48 | Depth | Depth of knowledge and the fear that you do not know enough yet. |
| 50 | Values | Values and responsibility, the guardian of what is good for the group. |
| 57 | Intuitive Clarity | Intuitive clarity in the moment, the sharpest instinct in the chart. |
Solar plexus center gates
The Solar Plexus is both a motor and an awareness center: emotions, moods, desire and sensitivity. Its seven gates move in a wave, which is why emotional clarity takes time, and a defined Solar Plexus always gives emotional authority.
| Gate | Name | What it carries |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | Friction | The emotional boundary that decides who gets close and when intimacy opens. |
| 22 | Openness | Openness and grace: listening with emotion, charm when the mood is right. |
| 30 | Feelings | Desire and the burning wish to feel; the fire of a new experience. |
| 36 | Crisis | Crisis and inexperience, the emotional push into the unknown. |
| 37 | Friendship | Friendship, family and the warmth of a fair bargain. |
| 49 | Principles | Principles, and the willingness to reject what no longer fits them. |
| 55 | Spirit | Spirit and abundance, carried by strong and changing moods. |
Sacral center gates
The Sacral is the motor of life force, work and sexuality, and has nine gates. Defined, it makes you a Generator or Manifesting Generator; its gates are where the sustainable energy for work and creation comes from.
| Gate | Name | What it carries |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Ordering | Pulse to bring order out of chaos and to start something genuinely new. |
| 5 | Fixed Rhythms | Natural rhythms and routines, the comfort of doing things at the right time. |
| 9 | Focus | Concentration on the detail that matters, the energy to keep going on one thing. |
| 14 | Power Skills | Power to turn effort into resources, money and skills that others can use. |
| 27 | Caring | Caring for others, nourishing them, and looking after what is valuable. |
| 29 | Perseverance | Saying yes and persevering through the whole experience once committed. |
| 34 | Power | Pure power to be busy and to act on your own convictions. |
| 42 | Growth | Growth that brings a cycle to completion, finishing what was begun. |
| 59 | Sexuality | Sexuality and the energy that breaks down barriers to intimacy. |
Root center gates
The Root is the bottom pressure center and a motor. Its nine gates are adrenal pressures, to start, to finish, to find a purpose, to be still, and they push up into the Spleen, the Sacral and the Solar Plexus.
| Gate | Name | What it carries |
|---|---|---|
| 19 | Wanting | Sensitivity to needs: food, shelter, belonging and closeness. |
| 38 | The Fighter | The fighter who struggles to find a purpose worth struggling for. |
| 39 | Provocation | Provocation, the energy that pokes at others to wake their spirit. |
| 41 | Contraction | Contraction and fantasy, the pressure to start a new experience; the first gate of the year. |
| 52 | Stillness | Stillness that holds focus, the mountain that does not move. |
| 53 | Beginnings | Pressure to begin something new and to see it through its stages. |
| 54 | Ambition | Ambition, the drive to rise and to be recognized for it. |
| 58 | Vitality | Vitality and joy that wants to make things better. |
| 60 | Acceptance | Acceptance of limits, the pressure that turns restriction into mutation. |

Reading the gates in your own chart
Start with the gates that complete a channel, because they define your centers and shape your type. Then look at your hanging gates, which tell you what you seek in other people. Then look at the gates of your Sun and Earth, personality and design: these four are your incarnation cross and are said to carry most of your life theme. The human design overview explains the cross and the centers in more depth.
To see which gates are active for you, put in your birth details in the human design chart calculator above. Every activation is listed with its planet, gate and line, so you can look each one up in the tables on this page. Remember that the gate's name is a keynote, not a verdict; the I Ching hexagram behind it, and the line, carry much more. For how gates add up to a type, see the human design types guide.
One caution when you compare sources: gate names vary. Each gate has a short keynote, and different books and calculators translate or shorten it differently, so gate 12 may be called Caution or Standstill, gate 41 Contraction or Decrease, gate 3 Ordering or Difficulty at the Beginning. The numbers never change, and neither does the center a gate belongs to. When two names disagree, go by the number.
How the gates follow the year
Because the gates sit on the zodiac wheel, the Sun passes through all 64 in a year, spending just under six days in each. It enters gate 41 around January 22, which Human Design treats as the start of the year, then moves through 19, 13, 49 and on in the order of the wheel. That is also why every Sun gate lines up with a stretch of zodiac dates, and why astrology and Human Design can be read side by side.
The Moon, by contrast, passes through a gate in about ten hours, so the transiting Moon colors each day differently. Many people watch which gates the Sun and Moon activate and notice when a transit completes one of their hanging gates, briefly defining a channel they do not have.
