The Reflector: the mirror of Human Design
By Nick Krüger · Updated October 19, 2026 · How we write these pages
The short answer
A Reflector in Human Design is someone whose nine centers are all undefined, so no channel is complete in the chart. It is the rarest type, about 1 percent of people by Human Design's count. Reflectors mirror the people and places around them, and their strategy is to wait a lunar cycle, about 28 days, before big decisions.

What a Reflector is
Every other type has at least one defined center: a colored shape in the bodygraph where two activated gates complete a channel. A Reflector has none. All nine centers are white. They still have gates, often many of them, but no gate meets its partner, so no channel and no center is defined.
That makes the Reflector the most open person in the system. Human Design describes them as mirrors: they take in the energy of the people and places around them, reflect it back, and so show a community how healthy it is. A Reflector who feels good in a group usually means the group is in good shape. A Reflector who feels off may be the first sign something is wrong.
Human Design counts about 1 percent of people as Reflectors. The calculator above draws your chart; if every center is white, the type line will say Reflector.
Reading a Reflector chart: hanging gates and the Moon
An open chart still says a lot. Each colored gate in a Reflector's bodygraph is a hanging gate: one half of a channel, waiting for its partner. Those gates are where the Reflector is most open to completion by other people and by the planets in transit. If you have gate 34 (Power) hanging in the Sacral and you spend the afternoon with someone who has gate 20 (The Now), the channel of Charisma (20-34) forms between you, and for that time you may feel the busy, Sacral drive of a Manifesting Generator.
The same happens with the sky. As the Moon passes through a gate whose partner is hanging in your chart, it completes that channel for a few hours. Reflectors who track the Moon's gate each day often find a monthly rhythm: the same few days every cycle when they feel steady, talkative or tired. Learning your own rhythm is the closest thing a Reflector has to knowing their own type from the inside.
- Write down your hanging gates and the channels each one would complete.
- Note who in your life carries the partner gates, and how you feel around them.
- Track the Moon's gate for one month and mark the days you feel most like yourself.

Follow my skyWaiting a lunar cycle
The Reflector strategy is to wait a lunar cycle before major decisions. The reasoning is mechanical. The Moon moves through all 64 gates in roughly 28 days. As it passes each gate it activates it in the Reflector's chart, and when it lands on the partner of one of their hanging gates, it completes a channel and briefly defines centers. Over a full cycle the Reflector experiences every combination their chart can make, and only then has seen a decision from every side.
In practice this means talking a big decision through, with different people, in different places, over about a month, and noticing how it feels on different days. A move, a new job, a relationship, a large purchase: none of them suit a quick yes. Small daily choices do not need the full wait.
- Name the decision clearly at the start of the cycle.
- Talk it through with trusted people, more than once, in different moods.
- Notice which days it feels right and which days it does not.
- Decide once the cycle is done and the answer has held steady.
Lunar authority
Every Reflector has lunar authority, and it is the only type with it. The calculator assigns it to every chart with no defined center. It works hand in hand with the strategy: give a big decision roughly 28 days and see how you feel about it across the whole cycle. The Moon's transit is your consistent pattern, the one thing in the chart that repeats reliably every month.
Some Reflectors keep a simple journal through the month, noting how they feel each day about the decision at hand, then read it back at the end. Patterns that are invisible day to day become obvious across the month.
Surprise and disappointment
The Reflector's signature is surprise: the delight of being amazed by life, by people, by what a day turns out to hold. It shows up when a Reflector is in the right place with the right people and is free to take each day as it comes.
The not-self theme is disappointment. It grows when a Reflector lives by other people's pace, in the wrong environment, or among people who drain them. Because they take in so much, they can end up living other people's lives rather than their own. Disappointment is their signal that it is time to look at their surroundings, not at themselves.
Place and people matter most
For a Reflector, environment is not a preference; it is everything. Since they reflect what surrounds them, the right neighborhood, workplace and friendships shape how they feel more than any decision method. Many Reflectors describe knowing within minutes whether a room is right for them.
Human Design teaching suggests Reflectors take their time choosing a home, spend time alone to clear borrowed energy, and keep relationships with people who leave them feeling like themselves.
The Reflector aura
Human Design describes the Reflector aura as resistant and sampling. It tastes the energy of others without being taken over by it, the way a sampler takes a small bite of everything at a market. That protects the Reflector from absorbing everything permanently, and lets them sense what is happening in a group without being swallowed by it.
Reflectors at work and in love
At work, Reflectors make natural judges of an organization's health, mediators and evaluators. They do not have consistent energy for long shifts, and they do best in roles where their sense of the room is valued and time is flexible.
In love, a Reflector needs a partner who does not rush them. Big relationship decisions, moving in, marriage, having children, deserve a full lunar cycle. A partner who understands that, and who brings out a version of the Reflector the Reflector actually likes, is a very good match. Rest matters too: many Reflectors need time alone each day to let go of what they absorbed.
Raising a Reflector child
Reflector children pick up the mood of a home almost immediately, and they often get called moody or oversensitive for what is really accurate reflection. They need a calm environment, unhurried time to decide (a week to choose a summer camp rather than an answer at dinner) and permission to be different from one day to the next. Asking a Reflector child how a place feels to them is a better question than asking what they want.
Myths about Reflectors
Reflectors are rare enough that most of what is said about them online is guesswork.
- Myth: Reflectors have no self. They have a consistent pattern: the Moon's monthly cycle through their chart.
- Myth: They must wait 28 days for everything. Only big decisions need the full cycle.
- Myth: An open chart is empty. Reflectors have gates, often many, just no complete channels.
- Myth: Reflectors are fragile. They are sensitive, which is a different thing, and their sensitivity is what makes them useful to a group.
Reflector compared with Projector
A projector human design chart has at least one defined center; a Reflector has none. Projectors wait for an invitation; Reflectors wait for the Moon. You can see how all five types compare on the human design types page, or check the human design gates page to read the hanging gates in your open chart.
