The five Human Design types, and how to find yours

By · Updated October 19, 2026 · How we write these pages

The short answer

Human Design has five types: Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor and Reflector. Your type comes from your chart, not a questionnaire: a defined Sacral center makes you a Generator or Manifesting Generator, a motor wired to the Throat without it a Manifestor, other definition a Projector, and no definition at all a Reflector.

The five types compared

Every Human Design chart belongs to one of five types. Each has a strategy for engaging with life, a signature feeling when things go right, a not-self theme when they do not, and an aura, the way its energy meets other people. The population shares are the figures repeated across Human Design teaching since Ra Uru Hu's time; they come from the system's own sources, not from any scientific census. They describe the sky rather than people: run thousands of random birth moments from 1950 to 2010 through the calculator above and the shares land close to the same figures, about 37, 32, 21, 8 and 1 percent.

How your Human Design type is decided

A type is not a personality description you identify with. It is the result of a short set of rules applied to your bodygraph, the same rules the calculator above uses. Two things matter: whether your Sacral center is defined, and whether a motor center reaches your Throat through a chain of defined channels. The four motors are the Sacral, the Root, the Solar Plexus and the Heart.

  1. No center defined at all: Reflector.
  2. Sacral defined, and a motor connected to the Throat: Manifesting Generator.
  3. Sacral defined, with no motor reaching the Throat: Generator.
  4. Sacral open, and a motor connected to the Throat: Manifestor.
  5. Sacral open, no motor reaching the Throat, but at least one center defined: Projector.

Is there a Human Design test or quiz?

Searching for a human design test is how many people first meet the system, and the honest answer is that the test is your chart. Your type is calculated from where the planets stood at your birth and about three months before. Put in your birth date, time and place above and the calculator gives your type in a second, with nothing to answer.

A questionnaire cannot do this, for two reasons. First, the type is mechanical: it depends on whether particular gates are activated, and no question about your habits can see that. Second, the answers you would give describe your conditioning as much as your design. Human Design holds that most people live as their not-self, shaped by family, school and work, so a Projector who has spent twenty years pushing like a Generator will answer a quiz like a Generator. That is exactly the mistake the chart is meant to correct.

Quizzes that ask how you feel about rest or initiation can be fun as a reflection after the fact. As a human design types test they will mislabel a large share of people. Use the human design chart and treat what it says as a hypothesis to test in your life, not a quiz result to agree with.

Generators: the builders

A Generator has a defined Sacral, the motor of life force and work, and no motor reaching the Throat. That gives a deep, renewable energy for work they love and an open, enveloping aura that draws life toward them. Their strategy is to wait to respond: to let life present something, a question, an opportunity, a sound or a sight, and to feel a gut yes or no to it rather than start from a mental plan.

When a Generator follows that response, the signature is satisfaction, the good tiredness at the end of a day spent on the right things. When they start things from the head, or keep going with work their gut said no to, the theme is frustration. The generator human design page goes much deeper.

Manifesting Generators: the multi-passionate

A Manifesting Generator has the same defined Sacral, plus a motor connected to the Throat, so the energy to build meets the ability to move fast. They often skip steps, run several projects at once and change course quickly. The strategy is to wait to respond and, before acting, to inform the people their action will affect.

Their signature is satisfaction too, and their not-self theme is frustration and anger, because they feel both the Generator's stuck frustration and the Manifestor's anger at being slowed down. For the full picture, including why skipping steps is part of the design, read the manifesting generator guide.

Projectors: the guides

A Projector has no defined Sacral and no motor wired to the Throat. Their energy is not built for sustained labor, and their gift is seeing other people and systems clearly. The aura is focused and absorbing, which is why being recognized by them can feel intimate. The strategy is to wait for the invitation in the big things of life: work, love, where to live, before offering their guidance.

The signature is success, and the not-self theme is bitterness, which comes from giving advice no one asked for, or working as hard as the Generators around them and burning out. The projector human design page covers recognition, rest and the Projector's authorities.

Manifestors: the initiators

A Manifestor has a motor connected to the Throat and an open Sacral. They are the only type designed to start things on their own, without waiting for anything. Their aura is closed and repelling, which protects their independence and can make others feel pushed back without knowing why. Their strategy is to inform before you act: to tell the people who will be affected what they are about to do.

Informing does not ask permission. It removes resistance, so the signature, peace, can arrive. The not-self theme is anger, usually at being controlled or interrupted. See the manifestor human design page for the full type.

Reflectors: the mirrors

A Reflector has all nine centers open. They have no fixed energy of their own and take in everyone around them, which makes them remarkable judges of the health of a group or a place. Their aura is resistant and sampling: it tastes the energy around it without being taken over. Their authority is lunar, so their strategy is to wait a lunar cycle, about 28 days, before major decisions, and watch how the Moon's journey through the gates changes how they feel.

The signature is surprise, delight at how life turns out, and the not-self theme is disappointment. More on the reflector human design page.

Four types or five?

You will see both numbers. Ra Uru Hu and the Jovian Archive teach four types, Manifestor, Generator, Projector and Reflector, and treat the Manifesting Generator as a kind of Generator, about 70 percent of people together. Most modern teachers and apps list five, because the Manifesting Generator's strategy, not-self theme and pace differ enough to deserve their own name. Nothing in the chart changes: the mechanics are identical, only the counting differs. This site uses five, like the calculator above.

Which authorities each type can have

Type and authority are linked, so knowing one narrows the other. This is a quick way to check a chart someone sent you: a Generator with splenic authority, or a Projector with sacral authority, means the chart was misread.

TypePossible authorities
GeneratorEmotional or sacral
Manifesting GeneratorEmotional or sacral
ProjectorEmotional, splenic, ego projected, self-projected or mental
ManifestorEmotional, splenic or ego manifested
ReflectorLunar only

Energy types and non-energy types

Teachers often group the five into two families. Generators and Manifesting Generators are the energy types: their defined Sacral gives them sustainable working energy, and together they make up roughly seven in ten people. Manifestors, Projectors and Reflectors are the non-energy types: without a defined Sacral, they are not built for long hours of steady work, and do best with rest, rhythm and recognition rather than stamina.

That split explains much of why the system resonates. A Projector who has always felt lazy beside their Generator colleagues often finds relief in hearing that the difference is in the wiring. The point is not to excuse anyone, but to let each type stop measuring itself by another type's yardstick.

Type is a starting point, not a box

Two Generators can look nothing alike. Type is shaped by your authority, your profile, which centers are open, and which channels are defined, and Human Design is honest that it is a framework for experiment, not a fact proven by science. Try your strategy for a month on small decisions. If life gets easier, keep it. If not, the chart has told you something too.

Questions people ask

The Reflector, at roughly 1% by the figures Human Design teachers cite. It needs every one of the 26 activations to leave each channel incomplete, which happens rarely. Manifestors, at about 9%, are the next rarest.

No. The rules give each chart exactly one type. A Manifesting Generator is not half Generator and half Manifestor: it is a Generator whose Sacral or another motor reaches the Throat, with a defined Sacral like a Generator and a Throat connection like a Manifestor.

Feeling like several types is common, because your open centers take in the people around you. Your chart settles it: put in your birth details above, then try that type's strategy for a few weeks and notice what changes.

Only loosely. Myers-Briggs sorts people by answers to questions about preferences. Human Design types come from the birth chart and describe how energy and decisions work, not traits, and neither has been shown to predict much by research.
