ChatGPT astrology: calculate the chart first, then ask
By Nick Krüger · Updated October 31, 2026 · How we write these pages
The short answer
ChatGPT can explain astrology well, but it guesses planet positions, and its Moon and rising signs are often wrong. For a reliable ChatGPT astrology reading, calculate your birth chart with an ephemeris first, then paste the exact positions into the chat as fixed facts. The tool above does both from your birth date, time and place.
Calculate first, then ask
Your chart as text a chatbot can read
Every position is worked out here, in your browser, by the same ephemeris as our free birth chart. Paste it into any chatbot so it reads your real chart instead of guessing.
Is ChatGPT good at astrology?
At the interpretation, often yes. Astrology's symbolism is written down in thousands of books and sites, so ChatGPT can say what a Scorpio Moon or a Saturn square traditionally means, compare a few placements and write it in a friendly voice. Ask it to explain something you already know about your chart and the answer is usually sound.
At the calculation, no. Finding where the Moon stood at 6:40 a.m. on a Tuesday in 1994 is orbital arithmetic, and a language model does not do arithmetic the way a calculator does; it predicts plausible text. Unless it runs real code, it answers with a sign that sounds right. So the Sun is usually right, because the dates are easy to look up, while the Moon and above all the rising sign are where its guesses go wrong.
Why ChatGPT gets your Moon and rising sign wrong
Each placement needs a different amount of precision. The Sun changes sign once a month on known dates, so a table in its training data covers it. The Moon changes sign every two to three days, and the rising sign every two hours or so, and both depend on the time zone that applied in your birthplace on that date, daylight saving included. That is where a model's guess falls apart.
The error is quiet. ChatGPT rarely says "I am not sure"; it gives a sign and then writes a whole confident paragraph on top of it. A reading built on the wrong rising sign puts every planet in the wrong house, so the problem is not one line, it is the whole reading.
| Placement | Changes sign | Can ChatGPT guess it? |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | About once a month | Usually, except on cusp days |
| Moon | Every 2 to 3 days | Often wrong |
| Rising sign | Every 2 hours or so | Close to a guess |
| Houses | Follow the rising sign | Wrong whenever the rising sign is |

Start my horoscopeThe fix: calculate here, paste the positions in
The tool at the top of this page works out your chart in the browser, with the same ephemeris and house math as the free birth chart on this site. It lists every planet with its degree, sign and house, your rising sign and midheaven, and the tightest aspects. Then it writes a prompt with all of that filled in and tells the chatbot to use the positions as given.
- Enter your birth date. Add the time and pick your birth place from the list if you know them.
- Check the positions. If your time is unknown, the rising sign and houses say unknown, and a Moon that changed sign that day is shown as both signs.
- Copy the prompt and paste it into ChatGPT or any chatbot.
- Ask follow-ups in the same chat, such as "What does my Venus placement say about how I show care?"
ChatGPT astrology prompts that work
Once the chart is in the chat, short focused questions get better answers than "tell me everything". A few that tend to work well:
- "Using only the positions above, describe my Sun, Moon and rising sign as three sides of one person, in under 200 words."
- "Which two aspects in my chart are tightest, and what tension or talent do they traditionally describe?"
- "I am deciding whether to change jobs. Which placements speak to work and ambition, and what do they suggest I weigh? Do not tell me what to choose."
- "Explain my 7th house in plain words, and say which parts are uncertain if my birth time might be off by an hour."
Custom astrology GPTs: how to tell if one really calculates
Search for ChatGPT astrology and the first results are often astrology apps inside ChatGPT itself, the custom GPTs and plugins in its directory. Some of them call real ephemeris code and some are only a model with an astrology-flavored instruction, and the listing rarely says which. You can find out in two minutes.
- Ask for your Moon with its degree, not just its sign. A real calculation gives something like 14°22' Pisces; a guess gives a sign and a paragraph.
- Ask which house system it used. Placidus, Whole Sign and Koch are the usual answers; a tool that cannot name one did not compute houses.
- Ask it to check for daylight saving time on your birth date in your birthplace. Calculators handle this; a guess skips it.
- Compare its rising sign and Moon with the tool at the top of this page. If they differ, trust the one that shows its degrees.
Mistakes that make a ChatGPT birth chart reading wrong
Most bad readings trace back to the input rather than the writing. These are the common ones.
- Giving the date but not the birth place, so the time is read in the wrong time zone and the rising sign shifts.
- Letting a form default the time to 12:00 noon. That is not "time unknown"; it produces a confident rising sign for a moment you were probably not born.
- Mixing tropical and sidereal. Western astrology is tropical and Vedic is sidereal, about 24 degrees apart, so most placements move back a sign. Say which one you want.
- Pasting a chart from one source and asking follow-ups about another, so the houses no longer match the planets.
- Asking for predictions with dates. The chart describes themes; a chatbot asked for dates will invent them.
ChatGPT, an astrology app or an astrologer?
Each is good at a different part of the job.
| Compared | ChatGPT with a pasted chart | An astrology app | A human astrologer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where the positions come from | The calculator you pasted from | The app's own ephemeris | Their software |
| Today's sky | Only if you paste it in | Updated daily | When you book |
| Follow-up questions | Unlimited, in one chat | Limited to its screens | Within the session |
| Cost | Free or a chatbot plan | Free tier, then a subscription | Per session |
Can ChatGPT write my daily horoscope?
Only if it knows today's sky, and it does not, unless it browses or runs code. A daily horoscope is the transits: where the planets are today relative to your chart. Ask ChatGPT for today's horoscope from memory and it writes a generic one, much like a sun sign column. You would have to calculate the day's positions too and paste both in, every morning.
That routine is what an AI horoscope app automates. Soulether calculates your chart once and the day's sky each morning, then has AI write the horoscope from both, so the lines are tied to real positions you can look up.
Is ChatGPT astrology accurate?
With real positions, the readings are about as faithful to astrological tradition as a well-read human writer. Without them, they are built on guesses. Either way, astrology itself has not held up in controlled tests of predicting personality or events, so read any reading as a reflection prompt. Leave health, money and legal questions to professionals.
